What about introducing this feature to konqueror's and the desktop's icon-view? Those views do also have space around their icons/thumbnails which could be used as a selection area. Of course, having a frame around an icon is more obvious to mediate the "click-here-to-select"-feature but this could be solved by either displaying such a frame when hovering the icons, or changing the background around them when hovering.

Would that solve the single-/double-click problem for you Tom?

I filed it as a wishlist-item: bug 115461.
