My comment #6 has just been implemented by apple in their new professional photo managment software : aperture. (See http://www.apple.com/aperture/quicktours/)

They keep the original image and the history of modifications. The different versions of an image are displayed as a stack of pictures.

I think they assume that the picture can be edited in other software only if it is called from aperture.
