I've just noticed something that could have saved me a bunch of time.
When I tag raw cr2 files from my Canon camera, it is nearly instantaneous - very little time taken to apply tags. But since I have an earlier version of photoshop (which I run in a virtual machine on my linux workstation) it (Camera Raw) doesn't recognized the newer cr2 files so I convert them to DNG, so I can edit them using photoshop. So, when I tag DNG files in Digikam - it takes an incredibly long time when tagging several at once. I convert all my CR2 files to DNG then move off the CR2 files to an external backup and forget about them and just have DNG in Digikam. Unfortunately I've done this to many hundreds of photos before tagging them - and now face the painfully slow tagging process. Easy workaround in the future and something I now realize I should have been doing is just first tag the CR2s before converting -as the tags are preserved during the conversion to DNG. So not sure if my setup is wrong or I'm doing something wrong, but not sure why DNG takes so long in applying tags. I am using Adobe's DNG converter as I have not yet figured out how to get Digikam's DNG conversion to work as well - I'm not happy with color/white balance. Happy New Year and love the Digikam program - many thanks for your hard work on it! cheers, JD _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |

Not sure if I'm on the right track, but the speed difference might be due to Digikam not writing the tags to CR2 files, while it can (and does) write them to the DNG files. In both cases the database will be updated as well, but that is relatively fast. This would also imply that tagging the CR2 files and then converting with Adobe converter wouldn't help (I'd not expect the Adobe converter to use the Digikam database) Good luck _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |

This time it did not bring the tags along - the DNG files are not tagged. So I must have been fooled somehow or imagined it worked before. I am a Canon user too. I have tried tagging cr2 files before and it does not work. That is one of the reasons why I convert all my cr2 files to DNG (via Adobe DNG converter). Once the RAW files are DNG's, I apply the tags with no problem - well, besides how LONG it takes... Hope this helps. O. On Sun, Jan 2, 2011 at 12:45 PM, Jim Dory <[hidden email]> wrote:

Metadata writting on files is delegate to Exiv2 library. This one support in writting mode DNG files, but not yet CR2 files.
This is explain difference between DNG and CR2 files handling. Writting tags in file metadata can take a while. Gilles Caulier 2011/1/4 Ozzy <[hidden email]>
