scanning for new entries - stuck after 89% (Win7 32bit)

Fabian Frank
Hi,
I am using Digikam 4.10 on Windows 7 (32bit).

If I start digikam with my picture-HD attached, it will start the
scanning of new entries. But it always stops at 89%.
Digikam is still functioning, but it is using about 50% of the processor
power - so the whole system gets sluggish.

If I start Digikam without the HD and plug it in later, all is fine.

I use another program to copy my pictures on the HD (because of the
importbug which is still there...).
So this thing is really annoying for me. I have to refresh (F5) every
folder manually :-(

Any help.

Thanks.

Best, Fabian

Hi Frank,

too bad to hear this problem exists jn 4.10 also. upgrading was one of my ideas to try and solve it. I am on ubuntu 15.04 and digikam 4.7.

Does anyone know a solution or workaround? or at least how to discover which picture it barfs on?

regards,

Bert

If you have video files in your collection, this can be the problem. A dysfunction in Exiv2 exist with last and older Exiv2 release. A new Exiv2 is planed in near future including fixes.

Re: scanning for new entries - stuck after 89% (Win7 32bit)

Bert Haverkamp
Hi Gilles,

indeed there are videos. Short clips taken with the digital camera or phone.
But sofar digikam has always been able to scan those.
Come to think of it, I did upgrade from ubuntu 14.10 to 15.04 in the last couple of weeks.
Could that mean libexiv2 has been upgraded and the new libexiv2 version includes this problem, but not the older one?
Does that in turn mean downgrading to an older version would make sense?

A newer version would of course be welcome also. What does near future mean in this case? Coming days/weeks or maybe months?
I noticed on the exiv2 site that they don't release very often.

Regards,

Ber

Re: scanning for new entries - stuck after 89% (Win7 32bit)

Bert Haverkamp
Replying to myself with the solution.

Following the remark from Gilles, I checked the libexiv2 version in ubuntu 15.04. It is version 0.24 (package libexiv2-13_0.24-ubuntu1_amd64.deb  So I downloaded version 0.23 (package libexiv2-12_0.23-ubuntu1_amd64.deb) and installed it.
You can not uninstall 0.24, as there are many dependencies to it. So I took a shortcut and removed the link from libexiv2.so.13 to libexiv2.so.13.0.0 and replaced it with a link to /usr/lib/libexiv2.so.12.0.0
ls -al libexiv2*
libexiv2.so.13 -> /usr/lib/libexiv2.so.12.0.0
libexiv2.so.13.0.0

I restarted digikam and this time I was able to scan all items. This clearly proves a bug in libexiv2 0.24. Hopefully 0.25 arrives quickly and solves this.

Thanks everyone for your help and especially Gilles!
Regards,
Bert

Re: scanning for new entries - stuck after 89% (Win7 32bit)

Alan Pater
I am happy to report that this issue should be resolved in exiv2 0.25.
See the following report for details:

      http://dev.exiv2.org/issues/960

We are hard at work getting the last pieces in place to release exiv2
0.25. It should be out in a couple of weeks, as long as regular life
does not get in the way!

If anyone wants to test it, they can build exiv2 from trunk,
instructions are on the wiki: http://dev.exiv2.org/projects/exiv2/wiki

Cheers!
Alan

This is god to know.

When is the chance that this update will be integrated in the Windows
installer?

Thanks.

Best.

Re: scanning for new entries - stuck after 89% (Win7 32bit)

Gilles Caulier-4
At next digiKam release (around 15 june), if Exiv2 is released in time. Windows installer is a bundle application package (as under OSX) which include Exiv2.

Anyway, i think that we need a new metadata option in digiKam to handle video files metadata (until Exiv2 will be released and published as stable everywhere).

Someone can open a file in KDE bugzilla about this topic please ?

Thanks in advance
