"salvaging" something from the Digikam DB

tosca
Last week, I got a message when launching Digikam, saying (more or less) that the DB was corrupt, and I could start afresh by putting the digikam.db file somewhere else.
With the new .db file, I realized I'd lost all my taggings from the preceding 10 or 12 months ; I guess that sometimes (when I upgraded Digikam?) I should have lost the settings "copy the metadata to the file".

I don't know anything about SQLite (with a MySQL DB, I would have tried to use PhpMyAdmin) ; is there anyway I can rebuild my former .db file, or try to rescue some of my old tags. I still have a backup that is a few weeks old, but I had done much tagging since then.

Thanks for helping,
Marie-Noëlle

No way I can try to retrieve some data from my previous digikam.db?

Thanks for any help.

There is sqlite manager add-on for firefox:

And then there's http://sqlitebrowser.sourceforge.net/, I think it was
available in Ubuntu repositories at least

The beginning of this article is very promising!
I'll have a look before coming back to tell you how it goes.

Thanks for the link.

There is sqlite manager add-on for firefox:
http://code.google.com/p/sqlite-manager/

I found it this morning. Unfortunately, it seems it's unavailable for my version of Firefox (3.6.17)

And then there's http://sqlitebrowser.sourceforge.net/, I think it was

I'm running Fedora. But you're right, I'll see if I can find something for SQLite in Fedora repositories.

The firefox 3.6 version is available under "SQLite Manager for other
applications" section, link points to
http://sqlite-manager.googlecode.com/files/sqlitemanager-0.6.8-all.xpi

Or You could try to use XULrunner version of the app

Re: "salvaging" something from the Digikam DB

Thanks for helping.

I have just installed sqliteman from the Fedora repository. It is then simply available from the Applications-Developpement GNOME menu.
Just had to open (a copy of) the .db file, and update the DBVersion record as said on the page http://ymartin59.free.fr/wordpress/index.php/2011/04/29/digikam-does-not-start-do-not-drop-your-database-yet-it-may-be-fixed/

Digikam is currently in the process of reconstructing the collection, but I didn't get the "horrid" message about the database so, hopefully, it'll work fine.

Cool don't forget to activate the option "copy the metadata to the file" now ;)

Re: "salvaging" something from the Digikam DB

tosca
Thanks for the reminder :-)

I'm pretty sure I didn't change this setting since I began to use Digikam almost 2 years ago. But, since then, I've migrated from Ubuntu to Fedora, changed machine, upgraded OS and Digikam quite a number of times ... I might have had lost it somewhere.

Anyway, there might be something for the developers here: how have we (as I'm not the only one) "lost" the DBVersion number, and why isn't it possible to recover from this problem in an easier manner.
