You install digiKam outside KDE dir.
i do not find shared lib of digiKam. Your install dir must be in the PATH to work properly. You will see another problem to load all plugins. You don't use the best way to run and test digiKam... hmm, so in small steps, what should i be doing, if i want a stable version of digikam, as well as a local digikam on which i want to make the changes on?

will installing it in /usr/local/ help solve this matter?

personally, i never use local path to test digiKam.
I have 2 local source code repositories : one with stable code, one with experimental. Both are configured to be installed in KDE dir (/usr on my computer). To switch cleanly between stable <=> experimental, it's easy : uninstall first and install second instead. Use make uninstall to remove a version. It's perfect. To test without to break my image collection DB, i created another user which store a test DB for experimental sessions.
