panorama tool

Antonio Trincone
After few private mails with Rinus I prepared a zip files with new examples for malfunctioning of panorama tool. In this one the program answered with error messages which are included in the zip file that can be downloaded (ca. 20 Mb) in the link below if you are interested.
thank you for help

All downloaded without problem. The text output points into direction problem with to much overlap, I had already a little suspician in that direction, that this might confuse the software somehow. That´s a fine starting point for further investigation.

You can send this remark of mine with the link to ml if you want.

Thank for cooperation.

PS notice I used these files time ago with a Window program (do not remember the name) to stich a panorama and the result is here:

Please let me know if download works so I can send the url to ML too for info useful for others.
thanks

Hi Rinus
to me is not a problem of copyright at all. I am an amateur photographer and do not mind about this. Happy you enjoy them and sharing with you. No problem.

I used raw  for other examples of other panorama. At first with error just occurred I tried to transform first raw to PNG and then used PNG but with different examples.

During signalling of the problem to ML I choose to communicate the problem with the examples where I used jpg files as originals.
ok, than there is no need to send raw files here.

However as you know these files produced a good result with Digikam 2.1.0 and a bad one with Digikam 2.1.1, same with other examples.
I have to choose raw or PNG at home if you want other originals and I could send them to you.
However last experience yesterday with two or three old NEF files: I tried to stich and I got error messages from the wizard. Probably I could repeat it and try to copy (if possible) the long text of the error if it could be useful for you programmers.
that could be useful, the pictures and the output. If you want to go that far for it, I will be happy see what happens here.

I should probably not say this, and it is strictly confidential but programmers (I do not speak for Benjamin, I don´t know him) are just so happy if they can say: ¨not reproducible¨, that means for them that there is no problem with the code, but the reality is far less simple.

I am not a ¨real¨ programmer, I track them down those nasty bugs (it´s sort of brain game to me) but even then the obvious encounters denials sometimes.

The photos are taken where I live in Pozzuoli near Naples (searching in Google maps for Pozzuoli Solfatara you can get it by street view).
Therefore that's not a lake it is Tirrenian sea.
I have been there, unfortunately 35 years ago, I would love to see it again.

Thanks a lot for the pictures.
Btw. I suppose they are taken in your beautiful country. Which lake do we see here? This summer I was at lago Maggiore. Have been at most of the others too.

But you wrote this before:
I check jpg output starting either with RAW files or png files.

So, you did not send the originals I suppose. I don´t even know if it is possible to send 10MB+ pictures by mail, but in my opinion it matters in reproducibillty of the problem.

It is a beautifull picture and I can imagine that you hesitate to share it but I can assure you 100%+ that you send them strictly private and I will destroy them after testing.

Best,
Rinus

Please enclosed find an archive zip containing the three source files used for constructing both the good example and the bad one. While reconstructing the events I recalled the only difference should be digikam version (good one: 2.1.0, bad one 2.1.1) as you can easily see from exif data of two panorama files present on dropbox.
I am grateful to you for your interest, hope these files will help

Re: panorama tool

Rinus
The first thing I notice is that it works perfectly well if I convert them to DNG.
At some point I have seen a message about filezise inconsistency. NEF file reports 3038x2014 DNG says 3039x2014.
Would like to hear some thoughts about that.

I try with the example files and I get the same error (at least the error
showed in schermata2.png, I only get error like in schermata1.png if after
the "schermata2" error I choose to go back and try to launch again the
post processing).

But may be more interesting, I try with my own set of NEF files, and I get
exactly the same matter (schermata2).

May be there's a matter when processing NEF file, but I don't know what,
since the preview JPEG is correctly created in the /tmp/KDE-myname/
directory.

There are here two different errors here (which I believe are not bugs
within the plugin, although the plugin could have handled them more
gracefully).

I could not reproduce the first one with the photos you provided, but
I know where it comes from. The issue is basically that the plugin is
not ready to stitch a panorama composed of images taken with different
exposition and produce an HDR. The result is that if there is too much
overlap between two images, then Hugin's tools (that the plugin is
using) detect several expositions and refuse to stitch the images.
This is something I plan to fix in the future.

The second error is indeed an error on the detected size of the
images. Gilles gave me some DNGs that had the same issue. The thing is
that those NEFs files are really devious: in the Exif data, there are
two references to the width of the image, Exif.Image.ImageWidth whose
value is 160 (I really don't get that), and Exif.SubImage2.ImageWidth
whose value is 3040, whereas the actual size of the image is 3039...
Using exif data is then useless, and since Hugin needs them a copy of
the data seems to affect the integrity of the exif tags. I may have a
solution that will try in the next few days. Hopefully it will also
solve the issue with Gilles' DNGs.

Best Regards,

ps.: It looks like you have some dust on your sensor (see the upper
right of the photos).

I fixed this bug in the repository. It works with Nikon and Canon RAW
files, and should work with other RAW files. Note that the bug I fixed
only concerns RAW files as input.

Have a nice stitching ;o)
