I sometimes use Hebrew to caption my photos. In the digikam caption list
(the description of the photo that appears under the thumbnail) the caption is a series of question marks not Hebrew (or any letters). If I double-click on the photo (to enlarge it) ׁHebrew is written in the panel at the bottom of the photo. If I do search in digikam for a photo named in hebrew using the name in Hebrew, the correct photo is produced. In other parts of digikam the Hebrew name appears. In the right panel under the heading "file properties" the name is written in Hebrew. Under the heading "Digikam properties" and sub heading "caption", a series of question marks appear. Exactly as they appear under the thumbnail. Only in the caption is the name a series of question marks. As I said it doesn't interfere with using Digikam because somehow the name is read when doing a search. Is there a way to make the caption read a foreign language i.e a language not with Latin lettering? In Digikam 2.0b5 on KDE 4.6.3 on Kubuntu 11.04 I entered a Hebrew caption and it worked just fine. Hi Dotan
It took me a while to reply as I was busy updating to the latest version of Digikam etc. I have Natty KDE 4.6.2 Kubuntu, Digikam 2.05 beta using Philip Johnsson's ppa. I also did several experiments with Hebrew in Digikam. This is what I discovered. If I made captions to my photos BEFORE importing them to Digikam Hebrew was not recognised. I then had all the problems described in my original letter with question mark captions. If I make captions from WITHIN Digikam, they are in Hebrew. That's what I have a t the moment. It would be nice if Digikam imported the Hebrew captions!! By the way I have a scan of the screen showing all of this if there is a way of getting it to the forum. I now have a new and REAL problem. After upgrading using Philip
Johnsson's ppa I cannot open Digikam. When opening I get the following message: error while opening the database. digikam will try to automatically reconnect to the databas. This churns on my computer foreveer (until I press cancel). No Digikam. What can I do? Hi Errol,
Could you have a look if your db actualy still exists then open ~/.kde/share/config/digikamrc with gedit and have a look if those two rows point to the right place Database Name=/¨the place where your db resides¨/ Database Name Thumbnails=/¨the place where your db resides¨/ if changed save and relaunch digikam else you might have forgotten to mount the disk whith the db if so mount and relaunch digikam Rinus Op 20-05-11 09:50, Errol Sapir schreef: > Oops. Hi Rinus
Couldn't find "digikamarc" anywhere on my computer. I am using Kubuntu 11.04 if that makes any difference. The db and thumnails are where they were. Since restarting my computer (again) I now only get the Digikam flashscreem without the notice described before. Thanks Rinus. I found the file. It appears that somehow the db files
were unreadable. What I did was reinstall the previous version of Digikam I had which was 1.9. All works well now. Thanks. I am now going back to the problem I started with before I upraded to 2.05 beta. That was on another thread. Fine. I do not know if there are any incompatibillities between de 1.9
db and the 2.0 db. But it seems according to your experience. If you do ¨write all metadata to pictures¨ and you do make a new database after upgrade you should have version 2 with all the data you had before. (fingers crossed of cource) good luck Rinus Op 20-05-11 14:11, Errol Sapir schreef: > Thanks Rinus. I found the file. It appears that somehow the db files > were unreadable. Hi Dotan
After the problem described in the thread "digikam not opening" being solved, I now have gone back to the "Hebrew" problem. Your explanation set me on the right track to solve that problem, as well. The photos I imported where Hebrew was not read was from Flickr (or Picassa). There they were named in Hebrew which obviously wasn't transfered to Digikam - probably not using UTF-8. I have since downloaded the photos and renamed the photos in the place I store my photos. The Hebrew is now read in caption and all is well. Thanks for your input and directions.
