mplayer error with DigiKam on Windows

I am trying to install DigiKam on Windows XP in our organization and am getting an error at startup that it cannot find mplayer multimedia backend, I am also getting a similar error regarding VLC. I am also getting and error message that kdeinit4.exe has encountered a problem.

If I just keep hitting OK, I eventually get to the application. I created an album but whenever I try to access it I get an error that kdeinit4.exe has encountered a problem. I searched for this and found a similar problem but could not figure out how to fix it. Any thoughts?

Hi, the lastest release of digiKam under Windows is a unfortunately a
beta version... and many bugs were fixed in the final release.

You may try to compile a new version yourself with this :
http://www.digikam.org/drupal/node/402 and a little help from the
mailing list... but maybe somebody on the mailist already did it and
could give you access to the binaries

The error at startup is a KDE for Windows error and not directly related
to digiKam if I remember correctly... so you may also wait for a final
release of KDE for Windows 4.4 (in february I think).

Sorry, that's 4.3.3, rather than the latest, 4.3.4.  That worked for me.

After that, it starts up ok, and the most obvious problem is that XP sometimes (always?) won't shut down without you having to end a particular process manually. Kioslave.exe, I think.

I've tried following the instructions at http://www.digikam.org/drupal/node/402, but they disagree with what I'm seeing on screen.
