Hello all, I would like to get advice on what is the best methodology to migrate from my computer to a NAS. I'm planning to shift from SQLite to MySQL in the process. This is how I would proceed:
However I'm unsure if this is the
safest path/recommended methodology? More specifically, how will digikam figure out that the NAS newly created collections are in fact my old picture collections under a new location? My picture collection is several 100 Giga bytes large, with tagging of pictures for 6 years now... so relatively sizeable thing and I don't want to loose my tags. Most of them are stored within the pictures, but there are still the raws... Any advice would be much appreciated thank you! Nicolas.

Hi, what I did was to first create the data base on the NAS so I had two collection in Digikam then from within digikam copy the pictures from the local collection to the nas. It worked for me. Den 6 jun 2011 14:31 skrev "mm Malaleel" <[hidden email]>:

I haven't done this myself, but here is one way to go about this. First off, you might want to write metadata to photos. You can do this by using the the Image -> Write Metadata to Image command. This will ensure that you won't lose your tags. This approach works best with JPEG files, though. If you use digiKam 2.0 beta, you can enable the XMP Sidecar feature which lets you save metadata in .xmp file. This offers a much faster way to save metadata and it works well with RAW files. Use then the Database migration tool (Settings -> Database Migration) to switch from SQLite to MySQL. Create a folder on the NAS and add the folder as an album in digiKam. Move then the photos from the local album to the one on NAS. That should do the trick. Before you proceed, try the migration on a small scale. Create a new local album, copy a few photos to it, and do the migration. If everything goes well, you can migrate your entire photo collection.

This is how I would proceed: This is how I would do it. I cannot say it is the best, merely what I would do. 1) Backup db files 2) Copy photos to NAS 3) Use SQLite Browser to modify sqlite db to point to new location of photos on NAS. 4) Ensure correct operation of digikam with photos on NAS 5) Creation of MySQL db within digikam 6) Use db migration tool to move to MySQL At your own risk.
