digikam with xfce and thunar filemanager

dummy-8
Hi all,

i am using digikam under xfce.

The default filemanager within digikam seems to be dolphin. I would
like to use thunar instead.

Is this possible? I didn't find any configuration within digikam...

Anybody out there pushing me in the right direction?

Thanks a lot ...

Kind regards,

Alex

try to remove dolphin (it is not hard dependency, just "recommended" -
at least in Ubuntu). In Ubuntu (Gnome), removing dolphin helped and
digiKam automatically opens Nautilus.

Hi Milan,

thank you for your response.

But your advice didn't work. I removed dolphin. Now digikam want to
start konqueror.

But konqueror eats up all cpu and never finish starting.

I reinstalled dolphin.

Look in KDE control panel. There is a settings to adjust default file
manager (if i remember)...

Anyway, digiKam do not hard code file manager, but ask to KDE control
panel which one to use.

I don't know about xbuntu...

But i'm sure that you can setup that in kcontrol panel. Look

But there *isn't* a kcontrol panel in xfce, that's the whole point.

The default file manager in xfce is thunar, all the other applications
seem to honour this default.

Where does digikam use a file manager, is it for all the file
selections or just some?

DigiKam is using the DEFAULT SYSTEM file manager. You should consult
xfce support forum to find out where/how to setup/change default file
manager in xfce. This has nothing to do with DigiKam.

As far as I can see there isn't really such a thing as a default
system file manager, it may be that only KDE believes in such a thing.

Each application seems to select its own file manager, I see different
file selection dialogues with Firefox, Digikam and the desktop.
Digikam seems to use dolphin, the desktop uses thunar, firefox uses
something different.

You can get some change by setting the xfce desktop preferences so
that xfce doesn't manage the desktop but I think that probably only
affects applications which obey desktop preferences. (i.e. I think
it's probably an X preference of some sort)

In other words I suspect that it's a mess and not really anybody's
fault.  If you run digikam within KDE and like the KDE preferences
then all is well but outside KDE there are different ways of setting
the defaults and digikam isn't so well behaved with these.

Can I ask what function in digikam you are using that causes a file mgr to be
brought up?   I run XFCE and digikam  and I have tried to find it but  can't.
And I've never seen a file manager come up in any case.

I might be able to help.....

When you open a file!  :-)

E.g. when I looked to see what file manager my copy of digikam was
using I just went to Import->Add Folders and there was dolphin running.

I once ran xubuntu and digikam.  Like you, I needed an uninstalled
component of KDE for something related to digikam.  In my case, it was
khelpcenter.

I searched http://packages.ubuntu.com and learned that kcontrol is part
of the kdebase package.  Perhaps if you install kdebase your problem
will either go away or will be easy to resolve.

Ok,,,,   calm down.    I just did this and the file mgr that came up (in XFCE)

I use xfce too, I also found I wasn't told what file manager was run
in digikam.  So I ran dolphin from the command line and compared what
I saw with what I saw in digikam - the icons are the same, the layout
is similar, so I concluded that I was looking at dolphin in digikam too.

It's not actually my problem, I was just trying to help unravel the

In my case, I think I am looking at konqueror...  (which I also don't use)

Icons were the same....

Now when I load up a new release of *ubuntu, I always load kubuntu first and
then put XFCE on top.  This gets me all of the KDE apps I might want to use
(Kmail in particular) so I have all the KDE parts to run the control panel.

Will try to get it to run but since it doesn't appear to be directly
executable, it might take some looking.

This is about all I can see for kcontrol:

/usr/share/kde4/apps/kcontrol

Re: digikam with xfce and thunar filemanager

In reply to this post by Bruce Marshall
Hi Bruce,

the function i need is "Album", "Open in filemanager" (i'm not sure if
this is translated correctly since i use a german localisation).

In my version 1.0.0-beta5 this is the first menu item in the menu bar,
and the third from the end of the menu.

I wouldn't ask this feature, since it is no problem for me to work
around this. But i am the "personal administrator" for my dad's pc...
he makes his first steps. And for people like him it is hardly to
understand, why to use two file managers... for real, my dad is
confused. Hope you get the picture.

I hoped there was a simple solution. I will try f-spot. Seems not
really to be as good as digikam, but maybe it is exactly what my dad
needs ...

Thanks,

Alex

When doing the above....   I *do* get dolphin.

Which makes one ask:  "If digikam is using a default file manager, why do I
get two different file managers from different points within digikam??"

import -->>  add folders      gives me konqy

albums -->  open in file mgr      gives me dolphin

Because digikam is KDE native application and it is reading KDE default
settings not xfce settings.
Install KDE base, then open KDE settings pannel and change it there as
suggested.
