I don't know how to speed digiKam up besides placing the database files on an SSD but you can also switch the Lazy Syncronization ON.
DigiKam won't be writing changes right away then and will do so during idle time.

Subject: digikam hangs reading the database
What is wrong when digikam is extremely slow reading the database? Almost a
minute during startup. During operation, digikam is very slow when something
happens, for example a photo is rated, or a new photo added by an outside
application.
I use sqlite.
Is there anything that can be done to clean up the database?
Kindly,
Anders
