digikam crashes

Dr. Martin Senftleben
Hi,

I've recently updated digikam to version 1.1.0 (release 222) on my
OpenSuse 11.2 with KDE 4.4.0, 64 bit, using the "factory" repository.
I'm aware that this contains some risk, yet there are things which
forced me to do the update (also to KDE 4.4.0).
I think since the last update, digikam crashes very, very often. I'm
browsing through my images, evaluate images, use the image editor, but
don't really edit any images (in most cases). It just crashes, once I
have given names to a few images, or rated another, and so on.
Sometimes within a minute after I restarted, sometimes it takes two
minutes of work until it crashes. There seems to be nothing specific
that causes the crash, except that I am using digikam. If I just let
it be in the background, nothing happens to it.

Any suggestions? Or do I have to live with that problem until the next
stable release of OpenSuse?

TIA,

Martin

Well, as I said, I can't go back to an earlier version of KDE, I had
many more problems than I have now. It's only digikam that doesn't
behave, strangely.

Greetings

Can you provide backtraces for the developers?

Johannes

I wanted to, but the dialogue said the output was probably useless, so
I didn't. It usually happens when rating an image, or moving to the
next image in the editor.
I attach the debug info, this time it happened (as mostly) when moving
to the next image in the image editor after having rated the current
image.

Thanks. This looks like a kio issue. Gilles, we had such a bug some days
ago in the bug tracker with a length discussion to get useful
backtraces. Can you remember the bug number?

Martin, can you try to install the kdelibs debug package an generate
such a backtrace again. The intersting things are still missing here. ;)

Johannes

ok, I hopefully downloaded the right things, and the output is better
now. This time it crashed when trying to crop an image in the image
editor.

Unfortunately not :\

#6  0x00007fc3d5b3479b in ?? () from /usr/lib64/libkio.so.5
#7  0x00007fc3d5b4c8b4 in ?? () from /usr/lib64/libkio.so.5

These lines cannot be resolved. The ?? need to be replaced by the method
names causing the crash.

Regards,
Johannes

Same here. It always happens to me when I'm rating photos. I'm in full preview mode and I rate with Ctrl-number, hit space bar, look at the next photo and rate with Ctrl-number. After a few of these I get the segv that is attached. It's not clear to me which thread actually has caused the crash but I've uploaded it anyhow. This happens with 1.1 and the current subversion (as of last night) and the stacktrace is from the svn version. Didn't ever see this with the 1.0 betas and I used to rate in exactly the same way. I'm wondering if I'm doing the rating too rapidly. I have noticed now that when I rate a photo the preview image gets reloaded, which seems a bit unnecessary, and sometimes displays half an image.

Yet another crash in kio....

Marcel, Gilles, are we doing anything else with the kio slaves since
1.0? Maybe a threading issue with accessing kio from an illegal thread?

Johannes

Re: digikam crashes

Bugzilla from andi.clemens@gmx.net
I don't think it is KDElibs related, because all my other kio-based apps run
normally. Maybe I will try to go back to an earlier KDE version and see if the
problem is still there...

well, not from me.

But, why i cannot reproduce the problem here : Qt 4.5 + KDE 4.3 ? Here
2 computers are used in production, running trunk. No crash from
kio-slave

I'm running KDE 4.3.5 on gentoo. QT4.6.2.

To my great relief, everything seems to work again in KDE4.4.1 (it did not work in 4.4.0 or 4.3.5 but it used to work in an earlier 4.3.x release) and I can rate photos again.

I also updated KDE to 4.4.1, and it seems to work fine now.
