Light Table is fine (Ctrl+L)
Here is what happens when I press Exit Full Screen / Full Screen:

Ctrl+M does not work, I do see the toolbar but clicking on Full Screen button
does nothing.

Ctrl+Shift+F isn't working either.

See short video (you won't see mouse pointer so just look at the Full Screen
button)

I just installed MATE desktop in my system but it did not help. The window is
still in fullscreen mode and I don't know how to switch the mode OFF.
If I right click on any other window I see move and resize options available
but they are inactive for the digiKam window. Terminal does not show any error.
Any ideas?

From icon view contextual menu, it must have an option to switch off fullscreen
mode...

I tried that one too. You can see it on the video. None of the available
options work.

I also was experiencing the same problem with 5.4.  I upgraded to 5.5 and had
the same issue.  I deleted the rc files in .config/ and the issue went away.  I
am not sure what settings were causing the problem though.  If it happens again
I'll copy the rc files somewhere else and diff them against the new ones
created by the application.

Are you on Cinnamon? I went back to KDE and this never happens again
