Digikam doesn't show any files, in my Pictures folder I have few pictures in
various formats (png, dng, jpeg, tiff...) and Digikam shows none of them.

That makes it unusable.

Neon (Ubuntu 16.04) 64bit.

It's certainly a packaging problem. It's not reproducible here.
Try with Linux universal AppImage bundle available here :

digiKam 5.6.0 is now released and available as bundle for Linux, MacOS and
Windows.
