[digikam] [Bug 322323] New: Provide a more file-manager like interface

Thomas Bleher
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=322323

            Bug ID: 322323
Summary: Provide a more file-manager like interface
    Classification: Unclassified
           Product: digikam
           Version: 3.3.0
          Platform: Compiled Sources
                OS: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: wishlist
          Priority: NOR
         Component: Albums GUI
          Assignee: [hidden email]
          Reporter: [hidden email]

It would be really nice to have a more file-manager like interface for managing
photos. My collection currently contains > 80000 pictures in more than 2000
folders. I find that moving folders is quite difficult and time-consuming: find
the folder to move, drag it, try to locate the target folder, hover over
intermediate folders to open or close them, release the folder over the right
spot.

I would very much prefer an interface like dolphin, where several views can be
opened side-by-side (in one or several windows), and drag-and-drop is very
easy. It also helps that shortcuts like Ctrl-X and Ctrl-V are supported.

Of course I could use dolphin, but then I would lose all tags stored in the
database (as I understand it) . Also, digikam would have to recreate the
thumbnails.
Could dolphin be integrated with digikam, so digikam gets notified on every
file move and can update its database?

Reproducible: Always

Do you tried table-view mode introduced in 3.2.0 release ?

I tried the table-view mode, but it doesn't help my usecase, Reason: the folder
view is unchanged and still quite hard to navigate for drag and drop.
I have a custom import script that already sorts my photos into folders by
date, so I mainly want to move folders inside digikam ("this folder belongs to
'family', this to 'work'"...), not individual images.

It would help if the interface was splittable, or if several views (windows) of
digikam could be opened at once. Then one could move photos and folders between
the different views, like in a file manager.
