Hello!
I'm using the Build date: May 22 2020 (target: RelWithDebInfo) version on windows 10. In the 7.0 Beta1 (?) 2(?) (in January) the new face detecting (with deep learning, or other soft computing) debut. At that point in the "people" tab pane, was new options for face detecting: rebuild, learning something related for the learning algorithm, but in the new versions it is missing. And I read days before about the improvements to the faceengine. So what is under the hood? Its the "new" one with the deep-learning, or the old one what is was in the 6.x? (what is now working is new very useful: many face not detected, the recognize is suggest wrong faces example with glasses for people without glasses) Thanx Csaba |
Hi,
Sorry for the delay, but we are busy with students working while Google Summer of Code this year, about... ...Face Engine (DNN) and Face Workflow (GUI)... The students work and progress well. There will be a blog about the project advancement soon. One has just posted this one : https://kart1kx.wordpress.com/2020/06/05/reordering-the-people-sidebar-in-digikam/ and so yes, to respond to your original message, dysfunctions still here in current 7.0.0. This is why we have 2 students this year working on faces management. So the optimisations and improvements will appear after this summer, and after we backport students branch the master code. Now, I open an important question for everyone in this room (students, end users, developers) : "It's judicious to release digiKam 7.0.0 following the planned date before this summer, or we need to wait a little bit after this summer to integrate all faces management fixes ???" I'm waiting for constructive responses. Thanks in advance Gilles Caulier Le jeu. 4 juin 2020 à 13:47, Tóth Csaba <[hidden email]> a écrit : > > Hello! > > I'm using the Build date: May 22 2020 (target: RelWithDebInfo) version > on windows 10. > > In the 7.0 Beta1 (?) 2(?) Hello!

I already use the beta for the face engine and workflow, so from my view is all the same. I think one of the big rolls is the face engine in the 7.0.0, i think need to wait and integrated all inside... After the summer, it would probably last until Christmas. The current stable digiKam-6.4.0 is quite old now and we fixed a lot of bugs in digiKam-7.0.0. I would like to release digiKam-7.0.0 at the specified release date so that these improvements can be incorporated into the distributions. Maik Am Mo., 8. It might be useful to have those in a stable version once that is ready (perhaps after 1 or 2 RC releases), and keep the face recognition changes for the next update, once they are properly integrated and tested. Whether you want to call a release before summer 6.5.0 or 7.0.0 depends on how you use the version numbers... Remco |

I'm using Version 7.0.0-beta3 and enjoying it, but I don't even try to use face recognition now. Maybe working more now with students will enable a quicker release of digiKam with usable face recognition. Again, thanks for all the work you all are doing on digiKam. Jack |

Hi Gilles I would chose waiting if the earlier planned release would cause users - like me -problems because the facial recognition is incomplete or buggy. Great software nonetheless! Regards Sher On Mon., Jun. 8, 2020, 6:39 a.m. Gilles Caulier, <[hidden email]> wrote: Hi, |

Hi Maik,
I took a look at two student branches, and the Kartik project is well written and probably quickly usable in master. For the Nghia project, it's more complex and will require advanced tests to check all implementation with DNN. So I will prepare the RC release for next weekend (i'm late i know), and the final 7.0.0 release for july. Hi,
I think, it's more important to move the release-date a little, so that it could be possible to get it with a useable face detecting. Greetz Am Montag, 8. While I would love to see the YOLO face detection included in 7.0.0, the inclusion of the new algorithm yields so many detected faces that running through the recognition process for a library with more then a hand full of faces is just frustrating. As I understand it, the next version of Digikam can be made available in the Microsoft store for windows users. If this is the case, I think getting a current version out and easily available to the majority of PC users would be a huge bonus to the project and user base. Maybe YOLO and the new faces work flow can follow on as a point release in the near future when all the students code gets merged back into the main tree.
