[digiKam-users] google photos upload broken?

Peter Teuben
all

My album uploads to google photos has stopped working some week(s) ago.
The new OAUTH2 method had been working fine for me the past year or so,
but now it's dead again. It will properly read the albums, though there
is a message

unknown: reply error: QNetworkReply::NoError - "Unknown error"
unknown: parseResponseListAlbums
unknown: list albums

after each album. But the albums do appear in the selection box where to
upload to. Then when you select the photos, it  happily seems to process
the file(s), until I see this:

Digikam::MetaEngine::save: Metadata for file "DSC_8127.jpg" written to file.
unknown: reply error: QNetworkReply::NoError - "Unknown error"
unknown: parseResponseAddPhoto
unknown: response "CA .........."                        (long string)
unknown: In slotAddPhotoSucceeded 1
unknown: in upload nextphoto 0
unknown: reply error: QNetworkReply::ProtocolInvalidOperationError -
"Error transferring
https://photoslibrary.googleapis.com/v1/mediaItems:batchCreate - server
replied: Bad Request"

I've also tried digikam7 (beta), but same error message.   I've tried it
by removing the ~/.config/digikam_oauthrc file and revoking permission
on the google end, and retracing all steps. Same error.

I tried the very latest beta for Kubuntu20.04, which comes with
digikam 6.4, and same story. I've been using Kubuntu18.04 for my normal
digikam work.

If nobody else has this problem, something else I must have missed in
all of this, and I'll experiment around, but I'm out of ideas right now.

btw, flickr uploads work fine. So it's just google for me.

Re: google photos upload broken?

Peter Teuben
Hi Gilles,

thanks for the quick query ;    I used both 7.0-beta and 6.4 appimage
on KUbuntu 18.04 and I also tried native (whatever they used) 6.4 on the
Kubuntu 20.04 pre-release (mastered yesterday)

In reply to this post by Peter Teuben
This is your typical error message when trying to upload a image to an album
with a lock icon. It is only possible to upload images in albums that were
also created by the digiKam App itself (normal folder icon). This is a feature
/ bug in the Google API. There are many corresponding entries in the Google
Bug tracker.

The upload works here with the current developer version otherwise without
problems.

Re: google photos upload broken?

Peter Teuben
thank you Maik,

brilliant!   this was the solution!!!   I'll go hunt down that bug
tracker, to see if I can learn more tricks.

I could not see on the browser interface any icon or option where it
says locked or not. Let alone flip it.

Re: google photos upload broken?

Peter Teuben
In reply to this post by Maik Qualmann
answering my own query:   that lock icon is visible on the digikam Album
pulldown list. They look like a little folder that's either open or
closed. It's the open ones where one can add onto.

I'm sure this is widely know, but if you have a lot of albums ,
rebuilding that list takes a long time. A "Reload" seems faster to me.

Makes me wonder, should I find another service for my photos if google
is giving us such a lousy API?  Can we expect progress?

I use flickr too, but it's not so great in the social media world, and I
now worry about its future.

Re: google photos upload broken?

In reply to this post by Peter Teuben
I was hoping Google would fix this problem quickly, but it doesn't actually
look like it. I will add a message box when trying to upload to a locked
folder. As I said earlier with the Picasa Web API, there was no such
restriction, the new Google Photo API no longer allows it. Something can only
be uploaded in albums created by the digiKam App itself.

Re: google photos upload broken?

Peter Teuben
I guess one workaround to add to locked albums is to upload them to a
temp album, then in the online app move them into the locked album.

There was a time when the "new album" was not present for me, so I got
into the habit of creating an album online, and then adding into them.
Perhaps that was in the pre-XOAUTH2 method.

Sort of related to this, I'm uncovering a lot of info that's not in the
digikam manual. In face, the one I just looked at from 2018 says "TODO".

I'm now composing a section for this, who knows where it will wind up.
