Just a quick question. Is currently possible to edit video metadata in
digikam?

Hi,

yes, as read only files using XMP sidecar. video file still un-touched, but the XMP xml file store metadata in place.

Patching video files directly with Exiv2 crash quickly digiKam. Video reading and writing with Exiv2 is simply disable. We use ffmpeg parser to read file contents.

I currently save all my metadata in the picture files. Is it possible to
just use xml sidecars for video files?

yes. Setup XMP sidecar file only for read-only files (as RAW and Video).
