[digiKam-users] Use an existing folder as collection

kuddels
Hi,

I have an huge folder containing all my pictures. This folder "My pictures"
and its sub folders has the following structure:

My pictures
+-- yyyy event 1
  +--yyyymmdd day 1
  +--yyyymmdd day 2
  +-- etc
+-- yyyy event 2
  +--yyyymmdd day 1
  +--yyyymmdd day 1
  +-- etc
+-- etc

Now I plan to use the folder "My picures" as root collection for Digikam,
but I only want to import a selection of the events in the folder "My
picures". So with respect to the example given above I want to import "event
1" but do not want to import "event 2". But it seems to me that is not
possible, is it? (the exclude option is no option)

I think the only solution is: I have to set up a new folder for my
collection, e.g. "My pictures 2" and then import the required folders. But I
do not want to have two root folders containing pictures, in best case I do
not want to change my existing structure.

So, is it possible to use my folder "My pictures" but not to import all the
sub folders?
What solution you would suggest?

Thanks in advance!
kuddels

No you cannot. A root album will be parsed in recursive mode.

I recommend to cut your sub collections as different root albums and select the dir to import.

Other solution : import all and re-organize all sub directories in digiKam.

I have exactly the same situation as @kuddels and inadvertently created a recursive mess yesterday. :(

When importing files into digiKam that are already in a filesystem folder (ie not on SD card or similar), does digiKam *copy* files from <source> to <destination> or just record the location of the source files? I am trying to understand what is actually happening during Import so that I do not create another recursive mess.

Despite having read (and reread) the documentation, I do not fully understand the relationship between filesystem folders, digiKam root albums and digiKam collections. This is a major barrier for me at the moment. I also use darktable which seems to require a different mental model, hence my confusion.

digiKam is not FSpot or iphoto. It do not duplicates files to register as new collection.

Hi Gilles Caulier,

thank you for your reply! Yes, that is the way I started, too.

Is there any disadvantage I have to deal with? Is the number of collections
Digikam can handle limited?

Feature request: After adding a new collection Digikam shows all folders as
a tree structure. All already available folders offer a checkbox where the
user can select if Digikam should monitor/scan this folder for new files or
not ;)

Thanks!

notice digikam accepts soft links, it's useful to group in the same
place various albums

No there is no limitation in source code.

Check in digiKam bugzilla, in database sections, if the whish is not yet reported. If not, report a new file.
