At Export → Export to Google Photos is the option "Write the photo ID
to the source image". What's the purpose of doing that?

Hi,

Google photo return an UUID when an image is uploaded to web service.
When upload is done, we record this ID in XMP metadata to identify
which images have been already uploaded.
