[digiKam-users] Suggestion : export to folder button (windows explorer)

nonobio
Hi,

Sometimes i want to copy or move the displayed photo to a local folder on my
disk which isn't include in Digikam Collections.

Sometimes i use the "copy" button then i open my windows explorer and paste
the photo where i want.
Sometimes i do a drag and drop from digikam list view, with left or right
clic.

I think it could be good to have a button "Export to folder" near others
export tools :

What do you think about that ?

Thanks

Don't you have "Export --> Export to remote computer..." in your menus?
The 'remote computer' part has always been a bit funky, since this can
also be to another folder on the very same machine. Anyway, this is what
I use to dump image selections onto USB-drives.

Best regards,

I think nonobio is under Windows as he talk about Windows explorer.

Under Windows Export to remote computer is a tool based on KIO APi (KDE), which do not work under Windows. I disable this tool while Windows compilation.

Note : With 6.0.0, this tool appear as "Export / Export to remote storage..."

Re: Suggestion : export to folder button (windows explorer)

Dear all

I'm on Windows 7 & Digikam 6.00-beta3. I can't find an "export/export to
remote storage". Neither from the main menu, nor from the lighttable menu.

And I'm a bit desperate, because I have already invested quite a lot of time
into the hole setup of digikam, database, tagging etc. and now I find I am
not able to do THE essential thing I'd be needing most: resize-export images
to a local directory.

It is an important workflow for me to be able to browse through my
collection, pick a dozen photos (ideally with the lighttable) and then as a
last step resize the photos and save them locally on my harddisk. I'd prefer
this directory to be outside of digikams watched folders / album-structure,
as it serves only a temporary purpose. I will then use the exported images
for written reports (that's why shrinking the size is absolutely necessary).

I am really, really astonished to see this wonderful software supporting
exports to a dozen web-services, but not a single possibility for me to
export photos from the lighttable directly to my harddisk. I feel very old
now...

Best regards

Please check if "Remote Storage" is enabled in the the modules section of
the digikam settings.

Re: Suggestion : export to folder button (windows explorer)

ok, turns out in Windows the option to directly export to local/remote
storage is disabled, due to limitations of the KDE KIO API, wich manages
import/export and is not working for windows :(

Does anyone know a good workaround / alternative workflow to:

1. pick a dozen photos
2. resize the photos
3. save them locally on my harddisk? (outside of digikams watched folders /
album-structure,
as it serves only a temporary purpose)

(I have tried using the option to E-Mail a selection of pictures. That works
quite nice for step 1+2. Then it opens an E-Mail with the attachments all
prepared. From there I am not able to efficiently save the attached photos
(thunderbird-problem). I then tried to access the resized photos from
digikams temporary storage, but that's cumbersome too, as digkam creates
separate, random-subdirectories for each individual photo..)

Use BQM from digiKam. resize files (and more in batch) and store target in a dedicated album.
After that, from Album view, just use drag and drop to move or copy files where you want under Windows.

Re: Suggestion : export to folder button (windows explorer)

nonobio
Hi,

I just updated Digikam Windows to 6.0.0 : first : thank your very much for
this new version :)

Second : sorry : i didn't be notified for your reply since my first post and
didn't see them :(

So i'm facing the same issue : i can't choose to export, copy or move a
selection to a local folder.

The best workaround for me is to first open folder in windows explorer, then
use right clic to drag and drop items selected in digikam to folder opened :
i choose "move here".

It works but i have to open the good folder into explorer first. I would
prefer an action in digikam to export to local folder (with the ability to
choose "copy" or "move").
*Do you think you could add this function ?*

Another little issue about move task : if i use the "cut" button in digikam,
then "paste" in windows folder : items or copied but source isn't deleted
(it's a copy, not a move).
*Is it a bug ?*

Thanks
