[digiKam-users] Sidecars only for video files?

woenx
Hello,

is there a way to only use XMP sidecar files for video files? It is
currently not possible to edit video metadata, but I guess it's possible to
save that metadata into a sidecar file.

However, I'd like to continue saving my metadata in pictures by default. I
saw there was an option to use sidecars for read only files, which could
work, but I found that it also created sidecars if digikam could not access
the picture at that moment, or if it had incorrect permissions, so I'd
rather not use it.

It’s a pity that nowbody answers. That would be a very nice feature
request IMHO. I also prefer writing metadata to files and with this
feature, I could start tagging video files.

It's not a "pity". We are busy, with a real life on the corner. To respond to mailing take age. You must be patient, or search by yourself, in GUI, or source code. After all its an open source project. Look forum about closed project as "XNview" : To report a problem, an improvement, help, it's a "pity".

DK/Setup/Metadata/Sidecars/WritetoSidecarFiles/Write to XMP sidecar for read only item only.

This will include RAW and Video. There is no option to separate write to sidecars by type-mime. This must be implemented ==> bugzilla...

Hi Gilles,

I fully understand that you are busy and that was by no means a
complaint. I wrote "it's a pity" (which is true if someone who asks a
question does not recieve a reply). I did not write "it's a shame" or
that it was the fault of any of you developers (in which case I would
understand your mail). I was interested in the answer myself (I am not
the OP) and I'm happy I asked again, because your adivce helps a lot.

Thank you for this suggestion:

For my purposes, this perfectly solves the issue!
I tested it and realized that I first misunderstood the advice, it does
not only work for files without write permissions (in which case I could
remove write permissions from all my videos for that purpose) but it
generally works for files where digikam can't write the metadata to the
file (i.e. raw and video as you wrote).

Thanks for pointing me to that option!

Cheers,
Joram

Hi Gilles and Joram, thanks for your answers.

I occasionally enable the "Write to XMP sidecar for read-only items" when I
am about to tag video files, but I was wondering if there was some advanced
option to filter by file extension, but now I see there isn't.

In my particular case, some times I've given wrong permissions to a folder,
some pictures have become read-only, and sidecars have been created instead
of writing to the picture metadata without me realizing. Which is the exact
purpose of that option, I know, but I only wanted to enable sidecars for
videos since, by their nature, their metadata can not be modified (or even
RAW files).

In any case, it's not a big deal.
