Is this a normal behavior?

I thought it might be unnecessary since filename does not affect the image in any way.

yes this is expected. The trigger come from the FS watcher from Qt which create a eventwhen a new file appear in collection. Renaming create a new file, so the thumbnail is regenerated.

I thought if  there is a way to add a rule do not regenerate thumbnail after a file rename that might be worth to consider.
