[digiKam-users] Please could somebody help me with some FPX files.

I have about a thousand pictures in FPX format taken with a Kodak camera which date from about 20 years ago. Although only 20 years old I have been unable to find any software which will open these. The format is obsolete and the only application I have had any success with in the past has been Irfanview (a windoze program) but even this no longer works. Sadly I no longer have the camera.
I am sure I am not the only person in this situation and hope somebody here who has time may be able to help. Budge |

Just out of interest I had a look around and found that ImageMagick
should support this format using libfpx. You may need to search around for libfpx and compile it from what I've seen. ... and digiKam has a ImageMAgick image loader, so if your IM is
compiled with libfpx support, images will be visible in digiKam automatically. Hi and many thanks for the help.
I thought I had compiled ImageMagick correctly having built lipfpx but not there yet. Meanwhile I must have had a senior moment because I find I had already built, installed and run GraphicsMagick about a year ago. Sadly since then the system has been updated and what I have now no longer runs. I shall persevere but if anybody knows a reliable on-line service this may be the way to go so please let me know. Many thanks again. After libfpx and ImageMagic from source I have been able to open the .fpx files and Magick commands work as expected. What I have no been able to do is open the files in digiKam. I have put a sample directory in the required album subfolder but I cannot open the subdirectory or see the pictures. Have I missed a switch or setting somewhere to enable the IM support? Add "fpx" as image mime-type in digiKam Setup under View-> MIME-Types.

Hi Maik,
Should have been able to work that out but very new with digiKam. Adding fpx was easy. Sadly it has crashed digiKam and I cannot get it to start again for more than a split second. The first fpx image thumbnail flashed up before the whole thing crashed again. I tried removing the fpx subdirectory and starting over with only one file in the fpx subdirectory but digiKam crashes every time when I select that directory. I tried using the debug assistant but it wouldn't proceed even though I tried reloading backtrace and seeking to install debugging apps. If you can help further please advise. I have raised a bug on the problem I am having with fpx files but meanwhile have been able to confirm that the conversions from fpx to jpg does include the metadata as I hoped, thanks to some help with command from snibgo of the github/imagemagic community.
Interesting but what I recognise to be the date when picture was taken is shown as date:modify 1998-12-12T15:35:22+00:00 and my recent moving the file is shown as date:create 2020-11-13T14:36:00+00:00 This brings me to my next question concerning dates as I have to tag/edit several thousand images scanned from negatives without any dates when the pictures were taken. The date does not therefore appear automatically in the file name or at present the caption. What I seek to do is achieve a consistent approach for both scanned negatives and my later digital images. At present the digital images only have the metadata from the images. Is it possible to create a script to add the date taken into the caption. When I then wish to add a date to a scanned image, assuming I can identify it, I can add this by hand but the appearance of all will be consistent. My not have explained myself very well but thought I would ask while here.
