[digiKam-users] MP4 video orientation dk6b3

AndriusWild
Hello,

Looks like the latest beta3 does not orient MP4 video files accordingly to their rotation tag. All portrait orientation videos shown as landscape.
Can anyone reproduce?

Best regards,
Andrey

No problem here. Keep in mind that a manually rotated video will now play
correctly as the flag in the database. Just do a re-read of the metadata of
the video files.

Can you try this file?

It is shown landscape in my dk6b3 win64.

Re: MP4 video orientation dk6b3

AndriusWild
I created a sidecar for the video and searched for "orientation":

video:Orientation="6"
tiff:Orientation="6"

Is '6' a right tag? The video is rotated -90 deg so digikam needs to rotate it +90 deg in order to display it correct.

Best regards,
Andrey

With my developer version everything is fine, thumbnail is in portrait mode
and will play like that. With the AppImage the video is played incorrectly -
strange. The correct video orientation (90) is found in the AppImage. I
suspect a problem with the used QtAV version. Gilles, is QtAV from git /
master?

In reply to this post by AndriusWild
Right 6 is the correct Exif orientation value. This equals the value 90 that
we pass to the QtAV API.

More and less. It's git/master but not updated since a while. This can be the problem...

And in fact QtAv have not been released since more than one year. The devel continue as i can see the commit in github, but stabilisation of code take age.
I open a file in github to ask a release plan : no response...

Also, take a care : ffmpeg in AppImage still the last 3.x stable release, not 4.x.

Ok, the cause is clear, I'm using the last stable version QtAV-1.12 under
openSUSE. 6 days later after release, the automatic rotation detection was
added to QtAV. However, setting the rotation is now adding up to the detected
rotation  (bad solution), which confirms my observation with the AppImage. We
have to solve that somehow.

This require to detect the QtAV version used at compile time. Right ?
Or do you that i revert QtAv to last stable in all bundles ? I'm not sure about side effects...

I am wondering if straight ffmpeg / ffplay can be utilized instead of qtav.

No. ffmplay is X11 based viewer, using it with Qt it's like to re-invent QtAv...

Re: MP4 video orientation dk6b3

Maik Qualmann
Ok, everything is much worse.
I installed QtAV from git.
The QTAV_VERSION is still 1.12.0 so no recognition at compile time possible.
QtAV automatically turns the video upside down, instead of setting the widget
to 90, it is set to 270. Can we patch the version.h in the bundles so that
digiKam recognizes a newer version?

Re: MP4 video orientation dk6b3

yes, maik, all is possible with the bundle.

Look here :

there are already 2 patches. Just add new one and drive it to cmake rules... It's very simple.

Re: MP4 video orientation dk6b3

nonobio
Hello,

I always know Digikam displaying my vertical videos in the wrong
orientation; so i just turn my head until now ;)

Today i would to know if this issue could be resolved....

So; i'm on digiKam-6.1.0-git-20190328T184909-Win64 and my verticals videos
are displayed in "landscape" mode both in thumbnail, preview or full screen.

For instance, this is what i found in metadata "orientation" for a video
turned on 90° left in digikam :
<http://digikam.1695700.n4.nabble.com/file/t376394/HQ42Y5h.png>

and now a video turned on 90° right in digikam :
<http://digikam.1695700.n4.nabble.com/file/t376394/EGjJhJY.png>

For a well turned video (horizontal) i simply not have the line
"orientation".

Is it a know bug ? Should i create a new ticket ?
Tell me if you need more precise detail of devices, files, etc.

Thanks
Bruno

I can not reproduce a problem with all my test video files here. Can you
please provide a test video? If not public, then as a private email.

Re: MP4 video orientation dk6b3

Maik Qualmann
Ah yes, all right. Exactly these videos I also use for testing. These will
definitely be played correctly in the orientation.

Install the latest pre-release of digiKam-6.2.0

https://files.kde.org/digikam/

Perform a reread of metadata of video files (Item-> Reread Metadata From
File), updating via F5 is not the same.

Re: MP4 video orientation dk6b3

Hello,

I found the cause : my digikam setting metadata\orientation\display images
based on orientation tag was disabled. I enabled it and i now have my thumbs
and video preview wall oriented. The setting :

<http://digikam.1695700.n4.nabble.com/file/t376394/8mOzBwR.png>

But : disabling this setting was a choice.. for "pictures" (i want to see
the real orientation to manually force a rotation when i want) but i didn't
know it was applied to videos too.

Is it possible to add separate this setting into 2 settings : one for
photos, and another for videos ? As i said, i manually rotate my photos with
one click in digikam, but i can't do (don't want) the same for vidéos (i
think it is a more complicated process which isn't a good idea). What do you
think about this suggestion ? Should i create a ticket in wishlist for it ?

Thanks
