[digiKam-users] Lightroom like "Publish Service"?

AllanM
Hello,

I’m in the process of finally migrating away from Apple Aperture. I’ve narrowed my choices down to Lightroom or DigiKam. If I use DigiKam, I will likely switch to Ubuntu and finally give on on the Mac (been using it since 1985!).

One feature I’m pretty sure I need is Lightroom “publish service” feature. Here’s what I will use it for, and you can tell me how I might achieve the same results in DigiKam.

I have all my images and videos in folders, each with some event (birthday party, vacation photo, etc.). The structure looks like this:

2001
- 2001-01-05 Joe’s Birthday
- 2001-05 San Diego Trip
— 2001-05-07 Zoo
— 2001-05-08 Beach
2002
- 2002-01-05 Joe’s birthday dinner
...

An so on. In each album I’ve rated the images and videos. The publish service in Lightroom would be to export all the edited versions, convert the images to JPEG (many are raw), and recreate the same folder hierarchy as the albums. Only modified images are exported when the Lightroom "Publish” button is clicked (effectively an incremental export). I then use this on-disk folder structure on One Drive, my own Plex server, and other places.

Is there a way to export the entire library, 3 stars or better, mirroring the folder structure, only exporting the images that have changed since the last export? Or a way to achieve the same results?

Thanks,

Allan

Digikam albums *are* file system folders. So select what you want and
copy to an other album and voilà

Hi allan,

yes there is a file system export in digiKam. We work on it step by
step to improve the tool.

I looked at it, but I wasn’t able to figure out how to do any of the stuff I outlined in the OP.

1) How do I select the entire library, 3 starts of better?
2) When it exports, will it maintain the album folder hierarchy?
3) When it exports, will it only export images that have changed since the last export?

And finally, it there a way to automate all of the above so I just just execute a script or select a preset?

Sure, I could write my own script and exiftool tool to determine the rating of the image/video, and maintain a conf file to record the last time the script was run, but I would prefer not to have to do that unless I have to. I was hoping DigiKam had a service that already did this (like Lightroom does). I much prefer open source, if possible.

Allan,

Not all the features that you listed is implemented in digiKam plugin.
We need to improve the tool. Please feel a wish to digiKam bugzilla,
in Plugin-WebService-FileTransfer section.

See on this page for details :

Re: Lightroom like "Publish Service"?

AllanM
Ok, thanks.

I’ve been looking at the database, and think I understand how to get what I want, with one exception. How does the database store the relationship between a new version and the original?

If I have
/album/image.jpg

and I make a new version, I now have
/album/image_v1.png

and possibly additional versions. How is the relationship between image_v1.png and image.jpg stored in the database? I see the ImageHistory, which stores changes made to the file, but I cannot figure out how to identify the “stack” of images.

Do I have to make assumptions solely based not he file names?
