[digiKam-users] In which folder Digikam puts its database?

tosca
I have two sets of digikam.db and thumbnails-digikam-db files, one at the root of my user folder, the other in a subfolder that contains the only Digikam collection stored on fixed disk (others are on removable HDDs).

Which one is the right one? Is there a setup somewhere that tells Digikam where to look?

Since the most recent upgrade, it seems that Digikam has lost almost all my datas, and I suspect it tries to use the wrong database, but I don't which is which!

Thank you for your answers,

Marie-Noëlle

Re: In which folder Digikam puts its database?

I assume you're using linux. In my case (ubuntu 16.04), the three database
files (digikam4.db, thumbnails-digikam.db and recognition.db) are located in
/home/<username>/Pictures by default. If your computer is configured in
another language, the name of the folder can change (e.g.
/home/<username>/Images ?)

If you are not sure of which set of databases is the right one, I'd first
back them up (just copy them in some other place) in case you break
something.

You can tell Digikam the location of your database in "Settings, Configure
digikam, Database", where you can enter (or browse) the path to your
database.

In the case you changed where your pictures are stored, digikam may not find
them because the database tells it where to look for them. There is a simple
change you can make to correct the path to your collections, but you need a
software to edit the database, like "sqlitebrowser".

Follow the instructions in this page in order to do so:

I hope I helped!

Re: In which folder Digikam puts its database?

Thank you very much for your answer.

I'm now back to the right database, but ... one of my collection/external drive now appears twice, but not exactly in the same manner, as one of them seems to have lost (at least) all the pictures grouping (see screecopies below).
I need to remove one of them, but it has to be the one that has no grouping information. How can I know which is which? I tried to rename one of them in the album panel, but this is not allowed.

Sorry, I sent twice the screencopy of the album without grouping.
Here is the one with grouped pictures, so you can see the differences.

Re: In which folder Digikam puts its database?

woenx
I see. The "2A-ArchiveOrigin" appears twice, with exactly the same number of
photos. Maybe they both refer to the same place.

The icon on the top of the left panel, "Properties", shows you information
about the files, like the file name and the path where it is stored. I would
select one picture, check the path, and then select the same picture in the
other identical collection to see if it has exactly the same path.

If they both have the same path, the collection is probably duplicated in
digikam, and I guess that it doesn't matter which one you remove (from the
collection settings, not deleting the pictures directly).

Another option would be to clean and scan the library once again (Tools,
maintenance, "Scan for new items" and "Perform database cleaning". If the
pictures are not there anymore, they should disappear. But that process
takes some time. And if the same collection is there twice, I guess that
won't do anything.

Anyway, it's never a bad idea to backup the databases elsewhere before
trying these things, just in case.

PS: Belles photos de la Birmanie!

I have no 'Properties' icon. And right-click, then Properties doesn't display the path.

It didn't do anything.
I ended up deleting one of the collections in the Digikam Settings screen, and everything seem to have gone back to normal.

Thanks! I was just about to resume working on those. I was there one year ago and still have not produced the book. There is still much work to do.

Thanks for helping,

I'm glad you got it working again!

By the way, about the "Properties" icon, I meant this one:

I see... you wrote 'The icon on the top of the left panel' but in fact you meant 'the other left'!  LOL
