[digiKam-users] How to prevent Digikam from ignoring changed Metadata?

Chris Green
Well I now have an actual problem with Digikam and Metadata.

I changed the metadata on some pictures in Digikam and then, almost
immediately realised I had overwritten some (fairly unimportant, but
I'd lke to get it back) data on a dozen pictures or so.

No problem I think, I have hourly and daily incremental backups so
I'll copy the old, unchanged, versions back into my Digikam album.

But of course this doesn't work because Digikam keeps the *changed*
metadata in its database and ignores the new metadata from the 'old'
image files.

So how do I do this?  I need to tell Digikam to throw away its
Metadata for a few images and use the metadata in the images.

Disable the reading of changed files on startup,
close digikam,
replace the modified files with versions from your backup,
start digikam
select the affected images
use "item"->"read metadata from file"

It should be as easy as selecting those old files, and "Item/Reread metadata
from file". But you have to activate the "Clean up the metadata from the
database when rescan files" in the Settings/Metadata.
