It's possible that the camera only connects to your computer as MTP or PTP
device. Iirc, that means that only one application at a time can have access
to it. And if your system auto-mounts the camera, that means it has grabbed
that access.
Personally, I prefer using an external card reader to download images. Such a
card reader is recognised as a USB mass storage device (aka disk drive), and
that works very well.

No idea, like I said above, I use a separate card reader. However, Digikam
uses gphoto2 for PTP/MTP transfers. That said, according to their
documentation, gPhoto2 supports your camera..
But perhaps you can set the camera to appear as a mass storage device?
