[digiKam-users] How to add icons to albums?

Thomas D
Hi,

I have a lot of albums. Each sorted by year.

So I have a folder for each year and in that folder I have an album folder for each photo session. Each album is named by the date followed by some short description.
While it is possible to read the text and find the specific album, it is somewhat difficult to do this quickly. Other photo management systems seems to have an option to have album folders have an icon that is a thumbnail of one of the photos in that album.
Is there a way to have DK do that same?

This is an example of the current view of such albums:

As you can see all the icons are plain anonymous folder icons. Could they instead be something like this:

In this quick mock up, I just took a random image from each album and resized it to 16x16 and put it in as an icon in Gimp.

Is there any way to do this in Digikam? Or achieve something like this?

It could also be an improvement if I could manually assign an icon for each album, although that would be a lot of work...

You can drag an image onto the folder icon, that gives you the option to
either move the image to that folder, or use it for a folder thumbnail

Thanks for the tip!

2 questions:
1) Do this icon stay as an icon even if I at a later point delete it or modify it?
2) Is there any way to automate this? I currently have several thousand albums in my collection.

I just tried this in DK. While I do see the "Set as album th umbnail" action, clicking it does not seem to change the  actual icon on the album. Do I need to enable album icons somewhere? Or does it not work with small folder icons?

The thumbs are only displayed when the icon size is set to 22 pixels or more
in the digiKam settings.

Re: How to add icons to albums?

OK. Is it possible to have an option to show the icons even when folders are below 22 pixels? I think my screenshot demonstrates that it is indeed useful at even 16x16 px icons in that even just a color makes it much easier to find the right folder when you are sorting through photos putting them into various albums.
