[digiKam-users] Face tag workflow

David Griffiths
I am new to digiKam and still getting to understand the details. I have a few questions regarding editing face tags.

Questions:

- when viewing an unconfirmed thumbnail (green border), what is the purpose of the '-' in a circle at top left, the 'x' in a circle at top right and the '-' on a bottom at bottom right?

It seems the top right and '-' button are the same - they have the same tooltip.

- sometimes the top left has '+' instead of '-'. This depends on whether the thumbnail is selected or not. ??

- if a thumbnail is not the person that is suggested and I don't know who it is, I can't  find a way to put the thumbnail back into the 'Unknown' category.  I don't want to mark it as 'not a face'.  This is what I would expect the '-' button to do but it says it marks the face as 'not a face'.

- am finding that the accuracy is not as good as I am used to ( I am comparing it to Picasa which I have been using for years).  I have played with the 'Face Accuracy' setting. Hopefully the OpenCV library will just keep getting better. Is digiKam compiled with the latest OpenCV 4.3.0?

Cheers,
DG

As part of GSoC-2020, a student is currently working on improvements to the
faceengine workflow. Also on the buttons you mentioned. A larger, pre-
calculated face detection model is available. This will work much better, but
due to its size we will make it available for download. A another student is
also working on this as part of the GSoC-2020.

Re: Face tag workflow

The future looks promising then.

If the students need some ideas, I would suggest having a close look at Picasa3 (it can still be downloaded). Its workflow seems quite intuitive.  When it presents an 'Unconfirmed' detection, you have two buttons: 'Confirm' and 'Reject' - there is also a 'Not a Picture' button in there somewhere.

It also does more detection on the fly - when you confirm a detection, it then offers you more unconfirmed possibilities.

What is the timescale on these students?

Students already work on these face management topics, one on GUI,
another one on engine (AI based clustering of face tags).

The Google Summer of code event will be closed at en of August 2020.
In septemeber will working to rebase students branches to master and
prepare a future major release as beta. The plan, as usual is to
publish a finalized version for Christmas
