Hi,
My photos and my library file are on my NAS. Digikam keeps hanging. I've found the recommndation/workaround in the FAQs (http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-bugs-dist&m=117536777106366&w=2) but it's very Linux-centric and I'm using Windows. Is there anything I can do to get my setup working? Thanks -- Sent from: http://digikam.1695700.n4.nabble.com/digikam-users-f1735189.html |
Which version do you use? Try the latest developer version of here:
https://files.kde.org/digikam/ Download "DebugView" from Microsoft and start it. Start digiKam until the problem and post the messages that are now included in DebugView. Maik Am Donnerstag, 29. Ok.
By "keeps hanging", what do you mean exactly? Digikam shows the main interface, but freezes momentarily from time to time while browsing or editing pictures? Or it does't start at all? If it's the first case, where do you store your database? It's fine if the pictures are in a NAS, but it works better if the database is stored locally. To change the location of the database, copy the .db files (digikam3.db, thumbnails-digikam.db, similarity.db and recognition.db) to your desired destination, go to Settings in the main menu, Configure Digikam, Database, and you can enter the path in "Database settings" tab. When you restart digikam it should be using the new path. PS: in that link you pasted, it is suggested you create a shortcut (symlink) to your database instead of copying to your local drive but I don't know if that would be possible in Windows. -- Sent from: http://digikam.1695700.n4.nabble.com/digikam-users-f1735189.html |

I use digikam 6.3.0-git on Windows with NAS.
My NAS is just a Raspberry Pi with an external USB drive formatted EXT4 and shared with my computers via SAMBA. So my setup is not fast to begin with. I have around 50,000 images and 4,000 videos most of which are stored on the network folder. The database (digikam *.db files) is stored locally (on my C:\ drive) though. The setting "Scan for new items on startup (makes startup slower)" is ON. Startup usually takes a couple of minutes for I got used to it. Just keep in mind that network collections are slower. In your case I would install digiKam 6.3-git, let it run for few hours and check again. Per Maik's suggestion, DebugView is always a good tool to have because you will be able to see what exactly is going on while digikam "hangs". I bet it just scanning the collection. Keep in mind that "database" is a set of few *.db files where digikam stores information about your images. "Collection" is a folder where your images and videos are being stored. You can help one database and multiple collections. If you lose your database all the tags, comments, etc. you added to the items in your collection will likely be lost. That is why it might be a good practice to write the information to sidecar files or, for JPGs, to images itself. Good luck! -----Original Message----- From: Digikam-users <[hidden email]> On Behalf Of Maik Qualmann Sent: August 30, 2019 4:39 AM To: digiKam - Home Manage your photographs as a professional with the power of open source <[hidden email]> Subject: Re: [digiKam-users] Digikam wit NAS (Windows) Which version do you use? Thank you all for your messages.
Firstly when I say "hang", perhaps I'm guilty of using a word from the FAQ. Here's an explanation of my issue: I start Digikam. It spends a while scanning my photos and eventually starts up. Some of the folders in the Albums panel show photos when I click on them. Some don't. (They all have pictures in really!). After a minute of so, none of the folders in the Albums panel show any photos when I click on them. The program seems to remain responsive to mouse clicks at all times. I've managed to create a symlink as described in the workaround I mentioned originally, so that the library file appears to be on a local drive, but that hasn't changed the behaviour from what I described above. I would really like to have the library file on the NAS so that I can run Digikam on different PCs but always use the same library file. I hope that has explained my problem a little more clearly. Thanks for any further help you can offer. -- Sent from: http://digikam.1695700.n4.nabble.com/digikam-users-f1735189.html |
Something to think about, what about setting up mysql or something like that
and using that as the database source? Or is that not going to help in that case? -----Original Message----- From: Digikam-users <[hidden email]> On Behalf Of bingbonglong Sent: Saturday, 31 August 2019 4:30 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: [digiKam-users] Digikam wit NAS (Windows) Thank you all for your messages. Thank you for your response but I don't really understand it. Can you explain
further? -- Sent from: http://digikam.1695700.n4.nabble.com/digikam-users-f1735189.html |
