Re: DigiKam and multiple computers -- best practices WARNING

Ok, now I am being nitpicky, but is there any way to hide non-accessible
collections? I basically want to share a database between several users,
where each one of them has access to a common library and a personal
library, all of them in network shares. Right now the thumbnails for all
collections are shown regardless of being able to access that collection.

I know it's not the intended use for digikam's database, but if it were
possible somehow it would be great.

Hoi Karsten,
Can you tell how you setup the database. I reckon you used myphpadmin, don't you?

For all who are experimenting with sharing a digikam mysql database between
Linux and Windows:
I've come across a nasty issue with this setup.

if a picture is deleted (to trash) on the Linux machine, and one tries to
undelete it from the windows machine, the data base gets seriously messed up
- in my case, in the end, the database appeared completely empty apart from
the restored picture.
A complete re-scan brings back the pictures, however information stored in
the database only is gone.

Fortunately I had a backup copy of the mysql data directory (/var/lib/mysql
in my case), which allowed a successful recovery.

sorry for the delayed response, I'm busy with other stuff right now..

The initial setup of databases I did quite some time ago - as far as I
remember using mysql command line.
However I used 'MySQL Workbench' for adding the Windows pathes, as described
in my post on Mar. 23.

Regrding the problem with cross-platform undeleting, I've not made much
progress yet for above reason.
Actual behavior may depend on database history - in a freshly set up test
system using virtual boxes, I was not able to reproduce the issue (nor even
see pictures deleted on Linux in the WIN10 install)..

thx for the response, will try to setup MariaDB wiht phpAdmin within the next couple of weeks and will feedback a little guide
.

What about extracting files only partially for editing them on the move but feed back into database after return. Any idea?

I also use two different computers, one windows and one Linux. I am the only
user so I don't need simultaneous work from different computers, but I would
like to switch easy and keep all data in some synced folder (rsync or
cloudsync).
So I looked at the advice from karsten_df about editing AlbumRoots in the
digikam4 database.
I see that the thumbnails-digikam database is less clever; for every picture
it stores the full path. That is too much to edit by hand which means that
the thumbnails must be recreated every time I switch computer. With many k
of pictures that is a no-go.

To work, all databases need to store a base path in just one place and then
only use relative path.

Next step would be to allow the base path to be relative to the database
location, or to have a separate entry for each computer. I think that could
eliminate the editing.

(using version 5.8.0)

There is a beta feature in WIN10 control panel below Region / Administrative
/ Change system locale which says something like: "Beta: use UTF-8 to
support global languages"

I have no idea if this helps. After activation the different locale warning
dialog continues to appear :-(
