[digiKam-users] Complete Newbie Question

Stuart Cunningham
I've installed Digikam 5.9.0 on my Macbook and hit a problem that prevents me even getting started. I've selected the folder that contains all my pictures, but the initial scan process doesn't seem to be happening. I've tried Tools/Maintenance/Scan for new items, which goes through the motions, but doesn't seem to find any new items. I've tried to create a new album, but the new option is greyed out. I think there's something really simple that I don't know - please point me in the right direction.

Make sure your pictures folder has been added to Collections. You can check that in Settings- Collections

Re: Complete Newbie Question

Thanks very much for that advice. When I do that (in Preferences - Collections), I get a dialog box with "No default target album have been selected to process download from camera device. Please select one." That's what prompted me to try to create a new album - but the New option is greyed.

Re: Complete Newbie Question

Stuart Cunningham
Thanks for your continuing help ...

Screenshot 1 shows Collections appears to be empty, so I'm adding one. Screenshot 2 shows that appears to be working, then in Screenshot 3 an error message that I hope you'll be able to interpret.

If I look again at Collections settings, it's still as in Screenshot 1.

Looking at the screenshot looks like you are trying to import instead of adding a collection ...

Re: Complete Newbie Question

I've re-installed the application and get the same result. When I start the app, it goes thru the motions of creating a new collection, including scanning for new items. But the scan is completed in a second and finds no images. Is there a log file I could look at?

Re: Complete Newbie Question

Stuart Cunningham
Thanks for that ....

Lots of output, but I can't work out what's important. I see "digikam.database: Failed to detect a storage volume for path  "/Users/stuartcunningham/Pictures/"  with Solid" which seems odd, and matches what I see when starting with the GUI. The storage volume for that path is my SSD disk, which I think is mounted at /Volumes/Macbook HD

I also see instances of "All binaries found : false", which suggests necessary dependencies are missing. I run flavours of Ubuntu on other hardware and am used to package manager automatically handling dependencies. I sort of supposed MacOS did the same, but maybe not.

Regards,
Stuart

Hoping you're willing to look for what I'm not seeing, here's the full output:

I've re-installed the application and get the same result. When I start the app, it goes thru the motions of creating a new collection, including scanning for new items. But the scan is completed in a second and finds no images. Is there a log file I could look at?

Looking at the screenshot looks like you are trying to import instead of adding a collection ...

Can you send a screeshot of your Collections settings?

Thanks very much for that advice. When I do that (in Preferences - Collections), I get a dialog box with "No default target album have been selected to process download from camera device. Please select one." That's what prompted me to try to create a new album - but the New option is greyed.

Make sure your pictures folder has been added to Collections. You can check that in Settings- Collections

Re: Complete Newbie Question

Gilles Caulier-4
Hi,

yes, media management under MacOS is problematic. It's delegate to KDE::Solid API which work fine under Linux, and is not too bad under Windows.

For Mac, KDE::Solid has received while this summer a big patch to improve the support, but change have been introduced in next 6.0.0, not 5.9.0.

You can make a try use pre-release beta MacOS installer available here :

But take a care, it's a beta which introduce changes in database not compatible with 5.9.0. Do not use yet in production.

Best

Stuart

I've re-installed the application and get the same result. When I start the app, it goes thru the motions of creating a new collection, including scanning for new items. But the scan is completed in a second and finds no images. Is there a log file I could look at?

Looking at the screenshot looks like you are trying to import instead of adding a collection ...

Can you send a screeshot of your Collections settings?
Best regards,

Thanks very much for that advice. When I do that (in Preferences - Collections), I get a dialog box with "No default target album have been selected to process download from camera device. Please select one." That's what prompted me to try to create a new album - but the New option is greyed.

Make sure your pictures folder has been added to Collections. You can check that in Settings- Collections
