[digiKam-users] Bad, ok and I like it

digikam-2
I have about 50,000 images. Some already have color labels and star
rating.

I just want to quickly (it will take me at least a couple of weeks)
assign the equivalent of

* bad image
* ok image
* i like this image

What/How would you recommend I do this?

Thank you

You know about "pick labels"? Red/yellow/green flag, assigned through
<Alt>+1/<Alt>+2/<Alt>+3.

I use the star ratings, but I find it quicker to do it outside digikam.
I run geeqie in Linux and use the number keypad to assign a rating from
0 to 5, and have geeqie configured to write metadata to file. I've
always found two-key shortcuts (e.g. Alt+key) cumbersome. Using geeqie,
the arrow keys and the numeric keypad I can browse a directory of photos
full-screen quite quickly.

Just the way I use it. First, I assign green, yellow or red flag to my
"acceptable", "passable" and "not a candidate" photos. Then I filter my
"acceptable"  photos and give then stars accordingly.

I have not really used  the colors og star ratings very much myself. However, I do consider start using them.
But what I would like to use them for, I am not sure if it is possible.

For example, let's say I have been on some travel and taking a lot of pictures. Much of these  are either poor quality or just not interesting enough to show to other people.
I would like a quick way of generating a slide show or an exported folder with copies or an HTML gallery with a compilation of the best photos in an album. Or maybe across multiple albums. Maybe for an entire year or something like that.

Is this possible with digikam?
How would I go about doing this?
Lets take the example that I want a copy of all the images with 5 star rating for a specific year in order to print these images. How would I do this with DK?

Hello!

Yes You can export the pictures. I used the piwigo to show the pictures for others.

After to ratings your photos, there are multiple ways:
- you can search: it is very flexible: you can search across multiple albums, ratings, colors, dates, tags, stars, etc. In the result list you can select all photos, and do the export what you want.
- in one album there is the filter tab on the right side, and at that you can filter the best (stars, ratings, colors, etc)  photos.

with your example:
go to search, advanced search, set up:
    - select the albums
    - select the ratings minimum 5 star
   - try
    if you thing find all what you need then ok. (maybe need to use the reset button too)
after it, select all, and do the export with the "filecopy" plugin (maybe need to enable in the plugin-settings)

"Advanced search" allows you to select images on any combination of criteria
you can think of (tags, dates, file names/types, ...).

However, in your particular case (best images for a given year), I'd use the
left side-bar "timeline" (by year), with the right sidebar "filter".

Assign either the red flags with a quick key, (the quick key you can create yourself), or assign a star with a "0" key (also here, a quick key to create), then put the filter module and select all the red flags or stars "0" and put them together in the trash folder or wherever you want.
I hope to helped you

Almost. Yes but is there a way or making alt-1, alt-2... do:

pick label + move to the next image?

Thanks

Re: Bad, ok and I like it

Anders Kamf
Hello!

@Thomas D:
I use a combination of rating and tags for this purpose (to select pictures from multiple albums to be shown to other people).
-First I apply rating as a way to sort out the best pictures in the specific album (hence, five stars means the top selected pictures in that single album)
-If a picture is valid to see only in when watching pictures from that specific album, it gets a tag "Album-internal" (like a blurry but the only picture of a birthday cake, valid when looking through the photos from that birthday)
-If a picture is purely for documentation purposes, it gets a tag "Unsightly"
-If a picture is qualified for like "best shots of the year", it gets a tag "Selected"

Then I can easily perform a search in the database to get for instance all "Selected" pictures from 2019. Or all the top sorted pictures ever. In these searches, I make sure to exclude all pictures that are tagged "Album-internal" or "Unsightly".

Note: If I have been on a trip or another occasion, I tag all the pictures with a tag telling which occasion it is. E.g. "2019-TripToAsia". Then it is easy to make a search for top sorted or "Selected" pictures from that occasion, even when they are spread out in several albums.

Kind Regards
Anders

Here's a workaround for what you want. Use your left hand to manipulate the ALT and 1, 2, or 3 keys and use your right hand with Digikam in Full screen view to click to next picture/video. It goes fast that way.
