digiKam + Pentax *-ist DL == photo booth ?

I want to make a photo booth using digiKam and my Pentax *-ist DL DSLR.
 So far, I've not been successful, so I'm turning to the mailing list
for advice.  Any suggestions?

It's not a simple as connecting the camera to the computer.  In USB mass
storage mode, the camera won't take a picture.  In the other modes, the
camera doesn't show up as a mass storage device.
