digiKam 5.0.0 from philip5 PPA missing icons

Dmitri Popov-2
Hello,

A quick question for Philip: I've installed digiKam 5.0.0 from the
philp5 PPA on Xubuntu 16.04, but the application is missing all icons
for buttons, menu items, etc. Is it a bug, or did I do something
wrong?

Thank you,
Dmitri

Re: digiKam 5.0.0 from philip5 PPA missing icons

Philip Johnsson
Hi

It's a dependency problem with my packages on non-kubuntu systems.

The missing icons are part of the breeze package suit in Ubuntu. I'm troubleshooting how much of the breeze suit that is necessary. If you can you could help testing how much of the packages are needed. If so install one at a time to see what works for you in xubuntu (all the packages are installed by default if you use kubuntu).

breeze-icon-theme
breeze-cursor-theme
kwin-style-breeze

Hopefully the first package here will solve your problem with strange looking digikam 5 as the last package here (hopefully not needed) brings in a lot of kde packages that I hope you can avoid.

/Philip

I use Lubuntu 16.04. I installed

plasma-desktop
plasma-desktop-data

and this fixed my missing icons and dark theme. I then had to go to Digikam settings and choose the icon setup and theme.

Re: digiKam 5.0.0 from philip5 PPA missing icons

Philip Johnsson
Nate,

Thanks for your feedback. Installing those two packages sure would solve it as it brings in alot of kde/plasma things including breeze but I wonder if it all is really needed. The missing icons for digikam 5 is in breeze-icon-theme but I'm not sure if thats enough for you to select them as a theme in digikam.

Setting or changing icon theme in digikam 5 is done in the menu: Settings > Configure > Miscellaneous > Icon theme

Not sure if just the breeze-icon-theme package is enough for you to have digikam 5 show the theme as selectable if you don't use a kde/plasma desktop environment.

Dmitri Popov-2
Hi Philip,

Thank you very much for your prompt response! Installing the
breeze-icon-theme breeze-cursor-theme and kwin-style-breeze packages
did't solve the issue. I did choose the Breeze theme in digiKam, but
it didn't help.

Thank you,
Dmitri

Philip,

It allowed me to select a dark theme and the breeze-icon-theme and Obsidian Coast dark theme by only installing plasma-desktop plasma-desktop-data in Lubuntu 16.04. The only issue I have is that the settings menu is a smaller interface have to scroll a lot to get to what I need to change.

Then something more is missing and hopefully something that doesn't mean that you need to install most of kde/plasma (like Nate did even though it's a solution) just to get the breeze theme and icons. I'll install xubuntu on a virtual machine and do some testing.

Nate

Those smaller setting and configuration pop-up windows in digikam 5 as I can see it and not package dependent (is a bug). Right now you have to manually resize the windows to have decent working GUI for those windows.

Re: digiKam 5.0.0 from philip5 PPA missing icons

Philip Johnsson
Dimitri

I just tested digkam 5 on xubuntu 16.04 and this made the icons appear for me. Didn't even have to install any additional packages. Could you test it on your installation?

Install digikam5 and start it. No icons will appear. Go into Digikam 5 menu Settings > Configure > Miscellaneous and change from the blank setting of "Icon theme" to Breeze. Restart Digikam 5. Now you should see icons in the Digikam 5 GUI.

I tested Dark Breeze icons theme that you can also choose but at the moment it seam to miss some icons. I have to troubleshoot where those extra Dark Breeze icons are located in what packages and make the extra packages with Dark Breeze icons suggested packages or dependent packages when installing digikam5.

Looks like Digikam 5 doesn't know what theme to choose by default if you have never started kde/plasma as desktop before. Looks like this have to be chosen manually in this not obvious way when first starting Digikam 5 on non-kde/plasma.

It's not really a package or build thing but how Qt5/KF5 select icon theme if never have been run like this before. Not sure if this could be handled by Digikam 5 as a default if nothing else have been selected before. Maybe should be reported as a bug on non-KDE/Plasma desktop systems.

I could find no way to manually resize the setting and configuration pop-up windows in Lubuntu 16.04. Just curious,  in your test were you able to choose a dark theme like Obsidian Coast using Settings > Themes ? I had to manually configure the settings using Lubuntu 16.04. Re: digiKam 5.0.0 from philip5 PPA missing icons

Philip Johnsson
Nate,

I have only Breeze and Breeze Dark to choose from as Digikam 5 icon themes. I haven't tested if other icon themes can be used. Breeze Dark work as it should with its icons as far as I can see but if you don't also change to a dark Digikam 5 theme in Settings > Themes many Breeze Dark icons shows as white on white and not that visible without also a dark Digikam 5 theme.

I also did some testing on Lubuntu 16.04 and the only missing package that is needed on some system that doesn't use it is the breeze-icon-theme package. I just made an update to my PPA for the digikam5 packages and made breeze-icon-theme a dependent package so it always gets installed.

Still if you start digikam 5 on a non-KDE/Plasma desktop environment that don't have KDE/Plasma icon theme configuration files somehow before you need to manually go into Digikam 5 > Settings > Configure Digikam > Miscellaneous > Icon Theme and select a icon theme and then restart Digikam 5 to have icons shown.
