I have been a digiKam user for over two years now and I am still not happy. And please don't take this the wrong way, I am NOT blaming the programers and the community. I am blaming ME. I don't know what I am doing wrong but using dK is not a pleasant experience. It is maybe the combination of small things and my need for neatness and careful organizaton before actually doing some work. I am a BIG supporter of Linux, and Open Source, so I want to keep trying. This time, I want to see if I can start from scratch. Here is where I need your help. To those of you with no performance problems using Ubuntu and digiKam (if nothing else works I would try Kubuntu, but not for now): What are your computer specs (including monitor)? What distro are you using (version)? Any tweak you needed when after installing Ubuntu and before installing digiKam? Many Thanks. Hope this works. I've spent a lot of time in the past planning and researching the snot out of a topic before jumping in. Not sure I can be much help here because I've become much more comfortable with the idea of "if it works, good enough for me" rather than optimizing and organizing. > I am a BIG supporter of Linux, and Open Source, so I want to keep trying. > This time, I want to see if I can start from scratch. Judging from your comments, my setup would drive you bonkers: Lenovo t60, 2GHz core2 duo, 3GB ram Digikam is setup with all the albums AND database on a 1TB USB disk that I regularly sync with a second one stored in a separate location. Distro: Ubuntu 11.04 (but for the first time, I really regret upgrading. Ubuntu Unity may be the end of ubuntu for me. I just can't stand not having sloppy focus) So as you can see, my setup is not exactly going to appeal to anyone's sense of performance, but it does the job. I may try upgrading to an SSD soon and if I do, I may use the usb disk for 'archived photos' but keep a small subset of the ones I'm actively working on on the local disk which would help a lot. > > Any tweak you needed when after installing Ubuntu and before installing > digiKam? > > Many Thanks. I sometimes use only the internal monitor and it's good enough. I don't do a lot of printing or editing. Mostly, I use digikam to catalog my photos. For what it's worth, until about a year ago, I ran digikam on an Asus EEE PC 1000 with 2GB RAM and a 32GB SSD, a faster one than came with it. It was slow, but it worked. I think the SSD made it slow. It ran Kubuntu 10.04. I stopped using it because I ran out of space for my pictures. Otherwise, if I remembered to be patient, it was good enough for me. I've also run digikam on a Mac Mini. I used whatever version was in Mac Ports and a more modern version under VirtualBox + Xubuntu. Both were satisfactory when they worked but maintaining the Mac Ports version was more work than I wanted and I had occasional problems with Xubuntu after upgrading VirtualBox. I think that led me to the EEE PC which led me to my Toshiba. _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |

I use Ubuntu 11.4 with always the latest digikam (mostly from phillips ppa) and huge albums and no skyhigh specs computers. And most things work wonderful. So I was wondering what are your specs and what/where is your frustration. From that point I might got ideas why itś not working so well for you. Would as always be happy to help. On my side I have now a high end computer, but for video editing, not for digikam. My old PIV one was enough. That said, I have some problems, not really digikam related. I do not use batch processing inside digikam, but prefere to write small scripts with imagemagic commands (this is not a poblem :-). my problem are mostly synchronisation between exifs on online collection (web) and local collection (hard drive), I don't have this working yet. else my main problem is my lazzyness :-). I now have several source for photos (reflex camera, compact camera (several), smartpĥone (several) and friends images. When I wait too much to collect them in digiKam, I have to compare by hand memory card contents (kept long as backup) and digiKam content (where bad images are removed). I don't see any automatic solution to this :-( jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://www.youtube.com/user/jdddodinorg http://jdd.blip.tv/ _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |

I mostly use my Dell XPS laptop for photography related stuff. The most annoying problems are: And in general, I was looking for comments around new hardware. My XPS laptop is only 13in. Thanks. On Aug 22, 2011 1:44 AM, "sleepless" <[hidden email]> wrote:

certainly not Ubuntu, I scroll like .. here on Ubuntu 11.4 even with my photo´s on an slow external 2,5 inch drive. But I have my db on the internal drive. Did you use the tool ¨rebuild all thumbnails¨ , that is essential, for comfortable scrolling. Yes me too, but never mind. Unity bar? I did not know such terrible thing ever exists in digikam. I have my ubuntu set to classic. And removed the terrible overlay scrollbar as well, so everything is great. Need help to do so, ask! I do not store tags in pictures, so I don´t think I have that problem if i have I am not aware of it. I use a laptop HP Pavilion dv7 with an AMD Phenom(tm) II N930 Quad-Core Processor, 4Gb memory, but my desktop computer with lower specs and less memory is more speedy. So specs is not everything, and if I am well informed your laptop has an I5 processor, wich is not so bad at all. Your screen is indeed small, mostly no problem to the younger of age, but as I am no longer one of them, I had to dispose my 15 inch and use now 17 inch wich is fine for me. Regards, Rinus

If you modified your hierarchy of tags, digikam would not update this to the pictures (XMP/IPTC). After a rescan of your directories the old hierarchy would appear again. You will have to remove the old hierarchy/tag from the pictures. I don't know yet if this has become better with dk2.
