I used to use kubuntu until kde4 but have changed to ubuntu with gnome.
Digikam works fine under gnome. The main problem is that installing digikam pulls in stupid amounts of kde. I understand that it would need qt and some kde libs to run but do I really need to install dolphin, konqueror and phonon (just to mention a few) just to run digikam? I don't know whether the problem is with digikam or ubuntu/debian packagers but it does seem excessive. Other than that it does work. I think you should decide whether you want gnome or kde and then just install digikam on whatever you choose. As most linux users now seem to use gnome perhaps the digikam devs should look at minimising the number of kde parts that it relies on? I am not suggesting moving to gtk but just trying to reduce the footprint a bit. A common complaint from gnome users amount kde apps in general is the amount of kde stuff that need to be installed to run them and digikam is by far the worst that I have come across. It is a shame because digikam is the best photo app on linux. Compatibility is no problem. Only in next KDE version (4.4) things like Nepomuk integration will add value. Note that current Ubuntu packages regarding digiKam are seriously broken. Very big percentage of latest reports were due to version mismatches in *buntu family. Upgrading now you have high possibility of "vanished photos" bug (aka kio-slaves incompability) - especially if you ride on svn edge. Unless you are ready to compile your own version of digiKam. On more personal opinion: only from version 4.3 KDE is really worth using :) m. _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |

There is nothing broken with Kubuntu, the bugs you referring to is only if you have upgraded to KDE 4.2.90 from the kubuntu-experimental PPA. Kubuntu Jaunty (9.04) has digikam 0.10.0 in the backports if I remember right and it works without problem. / Jonas _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |

That is exactly what I've done just after 9.04 came out. Zero issues.

Go to Synaptic / Settings / Preferences and check off the "Consider Recommended packages as dependencies", or you can safely remove them (definitely dolphin, konqueror). But phonon stays in. And what's better: digiKam then opens Nautilus as File manager... br, Milan Knizek knizek (dot) confy (at) volny (dot) cz http://www.milan-knizek.net - About linux and photography (Czech language only) _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |
