Ubuntu 15.10 wily

Noeck
Hi,

as others reported, Digikam 4.12 packaged in Ubuntu 15.10 has no
geolocation features. I have a few questions about that:

1. Will there be a philip5/extra ppa for 15.10 (wily) anytime soon?
This is where I got Digikam from so far and I liked it.

2. Do you expect any problems when downgrading?
I used 4.14 before (from the ppa) and now I get 4.12 from the wily
repositories. Could this break anything about the metadata, database,
and so on? Can I use 4.12 for the time being and switch back to 4.14
whenever it is easily available in future?

3. Is there any chance that Ubuntu will still update their packages to
   get geolocation working again?
(From your experience with Ubuntu – I know that you are not the
   packager.)

4. Is the only viable way to get 4.14 and/or geolocation currently to
   compile it on my own?

Thanks in advance for any clarification!
Joram

Re: Ubuntu 15.10 wily

Philip Johnsson

Hi

I'm working on packages of digital 5.0 beta1 right now and after that I will look into digikam 4.14 packages for Willy. The reason why geolocation isn't found in Willy version of digikam 4 is changes in how Marble packages are built there and doesn't work with digikam 4.x. I might port marble rebuilds just for digikam to use in my PPA for that reason.

Digikam needs to be rebuilt with that marble changes if you want to make your own build with geolocation.

I haven't upgraded to (K)Ubuntu 15.10 myself yet and therefor I haven't given support for it any priority.

/Philip

Hi Philip,

thanks for the information. If I understand you correctly this means
there is no timeline for it but you plan to offer a recent digikam
version in your ppa. That sounds good.

Am I right that the version 5.0beta1 even if you package it is not
recommended for productive use?

Thanks a lot for your PPA, I am a satisfied user so far and it is just
more fun using a recent version of this great software!

Cheers
Joram

Re: Ubuntu 15.10 wily

Yes sooner or later there will be digikam for ubuntu 15.10 too on my PPA. I would guess in a week or so. Depends on how busy my week will be with other things.

Digikam 5 will be beta so I think it's fair to say that it's not for production use. I haven't tested it much yet and don't know how stable it really is. I'm planning to make packages so you can have both digikam 5 and digikam 4 installed on the same system and can choose what you want to use. You should be able to use them back and forth sharing the same database.

Philip,
Your ppa arround digikam is extremely useful for us in the (k)ubuntu world

Thanks for your great effort. I'm looking forward to select digikam 4 or 5then.  today i am using 4.14 with 130k images on usb-disk and the 20k images from the last 2 years on local hard disk.

Hej och tack
