Hi Oz,

Works fine for me under Fedora 15 - but in mine (DK 1.9.0), I go
Settings>Themes>Colors & just pick the colour I want - nothing about
Normal text etc

Using Digicam 2.1.1, KDE Development 4.7.97 with ubuntu 11.10 and the default desktop (unity).
Had the same problem.
My workaround was to change the system theme (System settings -> Appearence -> Theme to be used for the UI) from Radiance to Ambiance.
Now I have black text on yellow
