Synchronize digikam databases between computers

Bugzilla from gert.kello@gmail.com
Hi.

I have two compters where I want to work with pictures: laptop and home PC.

Is there any plans to support synchronizing two digikam databases?
Like tags, ratings etc?

Gert

More of a question for whoever answers yours, but hey.  If you write
metadata to files then sync the files between computers (rsync,
unison, whatever...) and rescan them on the 'other' system...  will
that do it?  Or is there other data in the database that would not end
up being transferred?

Cheers,

Most of my files are Canon CR2 files, so writing metadata is not yet
option.Perhaps with XMP sidecar files, but last time I tried it was
not able to create them when I executed "writemetadata to all files".

And this approach is not suitable for backup files on read-only media.

XMP sidecar support is implmeented in future 2.0.0 release. It's not
yet stabilized...

I'm looking forward to this feature! I hope this will allow for simple
file system level synchronisation (without touching any database) -
which even with metadata embedded in image files is not currently
possible in digiKam (see https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=173632
"Transparent update of picture content and metadata after file update
and on software start").

This should also speed up writing metadata "to files", if just small
XMP sidecar files are modified, instead of picture files (which digiKam
then apparently automatically rereads). That would render the wish
"Metadata delay write option"
(https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=218730) pretty much
superfluous (so that maybe it could be closed).

I still have the problem of two operating systems on one computer
reading the same pictures, sometimes with different versions of
digiKam - and not being able to simply use digiKam on both systems.
Just symlinking the SQLite database first seemed to work, but
eventually I could no longer write the database on one system, if I
remember correctly. Even the new MySQL support is not necessarily a
solution for this problem, because I don't want to always switch on a
second computer as an external MySQL server just to be able to use
digiKam.

But XMP sidecar files COULD finally solve this, if there was an option
to automatically update the database whenever XMP files changed.
Gilles answer to "Synchronize digikam databases between computers" (on
Saturday, 6th of November) suggests this could be the case. :-)
