Save original filename in IPTC

Hi guys (and gals),
what do you think about the feature to save the original image filename
in the database and the option to save it as IPTC information in the image?

This may come in handy when you get images from friends, relatives or
the internet and tend to rename them according to your own image
filename scheme. Without the original image filename in place somewhere
you have no clue to what the original filename was. Thus, it will be
difficult at least to refer to the original image in case you need it.

Opinions?

There is no standard IPTC tag for that... but this is already done in Exif.Image.DocumentName by editor or batch tools...

Oh, I didn't know that with Exif. Thanks for the hint! However, in IPTC
the 'Object Name' could be used for that.

The key to using this feature (if applied) would be some kind of
automatism that writes the image filename to this IPTC and/or EXIF field
as soon as the image is loaded. After that, the file can be renamed
however the user would like, since the original filename is saved as a
reference.

Would that be worth a feature request?

filename.

If there should be an automatism at all, than it is that these tags are
changed as the actual filename changes.

So, no I don't think this is a good idea, and if one is thinking about
implementing it, than I suggest to make it configurable in the
digiKam-settings.

Everybody has different workflows, so your suggestion to make this
available as a digiKam setting sounds reasonable. Maybe a setting to use
either the original image filename or the current image filename?
