Same again: impossible to run Digikam 2.x

Digikam 2.3 came with the upgrade to Fedora 16, but I get exactly the same problem as in August with the previous 2.x version: Digikam can only be run once; second time the DB is always corrupted.

When I run it from console, I get this message:

libdc1394 error: Failed to initialize libdc1394
QSqlDatabasePrivate::removeDatabase: connection 'ConnectionTest' is still in use, all queries will cease to work.
digikam(15851)/digikam (core): Schema update to V6 failed!
QPainter::begin: Widget painting can only begin as a result of a paintEvent
QPainter::translate: Painter not active
QPainter::setClipRect: Painter not active
QPainter::font: Painter not active
QPainter::setFont: Painter not active
QPainter::setPen: Painter not active

I don't know what to do. Last time, I downgraded to Digikam 1.9. I cannot even do that, as there is no 1.9 version in Fedora 16.
I'm completely stuck.

I also run F16 with 2.3 and for me it runs fine. My F16 install was a
completely new install, was yours an upgrade from a previous release? If
it was perhaps something did not get updated correctly? Have you been
able to check to ensure all the pre/co requisites are installed OK? Are
you using the standard SQLite database or MySQL?

Install/update libdc1394.

Before that adding a test user to your system. If it works with that test user
it's something in your home/config that causes the problems.

Install/update libdc1394.

It's already installed in the last version.

Before that adding a test user to your system. If it works with that test user
it's something in your home/config that causes the problems.

First time I launched Digikam I got this message:
"Le fichier de configuration /home/test/.kde/share/config/kdedrc n'est pas inscriptible. Veuillez contacter votre administrateur système".
Permission for this file is -rw-------
Is that right? I'm pretty sure I did see this message when using my own user some time.

No message or error when I relaunched DK on 2nd and 3rd time.

I upgraded from Fedora 15, but I had the same problem back when I tried to use Digikam 2.x with Fedora 15. At that time, I downgraded to Digikam 1.9 as there seemed to be no other solution.
I use the standard SQLite DB.

I'm no fedora user so I do not know what security they set-up. Usually the
user test should be able to write to that file.

So it works?

If it works you can try the following. With your original user.

Quit digikam and move all digikam related files from ~/.kde/share/config to
some other place. This means that digikam starts with a new config, so you
will have to point it to your pictures and database file.

Try to start digikam. If it works, the issue is in the files you moved. If
not, you have to do the same with digikam files in ~/.kde/share/apps and the
database.

I'm not sure there are more files related to digikam that could cause the
issue in case it still does not start with your original user but with the
test user.

If you have isolated the file that caused the crash you can start to
investigate which part of it did, e.g. by comparing it to the new file
generated by digikam and replacing each section after closing digikam and
restarting digikam, until you hit the one that makes digikam crash.

I ran an upgrade from F15 and have no problem. So this is not the main
problem.

Is the named lib available? Is the package for libdc1394 ok (check with rpm -
V)?

I had the same problem with F15 already, back a couple months ago, and no solution came up so I had to downgrade in order to use Digikam.

libdc1394 is installed in version 2.1.2, revision 3.fc12 from the repo koji-override-0 (1st time I see this one ...)

rpm -V libdc1394 doesn't return anything. Is that right?

Jep, that is OK. Only changes or missing files are reported. I have the same
lib installed but mine is installed from fedora main repository. can you try
to remove the package and readd it afterwards?

I removed the package, then reinstalled it from the main repository.
Using a copy of a previous backupped DB, I have been able to launch Digikam, and use Refresh in order to update the DB before exiting Digikam.
Same error ("Impossible d'effectuer la mise à jour du schéma ...") at the relaunch.

Both times, I launched DK from the console, and both time I got the message:
digikam
libdc1394 error: Failed to initialize libdc1394

I just tested on my netbook, that has exactly the same configuration, but on a 32 bits. Digikam run without a clinch. I've launched it 4 times in a row and didn't get any error. If I run it from the console, I also have the libdc1394 error message, but Digikam works nonetheless!

So, the libdc1394 doesn't seem related to the actual DB corruption and Digikam crashes.
Could it be some pilot problem? Or something that's different between my 2 computers.

So one of your computer is a 64Bit one and the other a 32Bit? Are the libs all
64Bit ones?

If you start digikam the second time is, by any chance, the old digikam still
running?

Can you check with lsof if the digikam DB is still used by another program?

Assuming you're speaking about libdc1394, it is a x86_64 version for the 64 bits, and a i686 one for the 32 bits.
I can check other libs if you give me their names.

If you start digikam the second time is, by any chance, the old digikam still
running?

Running a "1st time" Digikam after having restored a former DB, so Digikam is 'refreshing' the albums after I pressed the F5 key. But the process seems to be very long. As I launched from the console, I can see the following messages:

I waited till no other message comes up for some time before exiting Digikam, and got instantly the prompt back in the console; so I assume it was not running when I relaunched it from the console. And crashes again.

Can you check with lsof if the digikam DB is still used by another program?

lsof | grep digikam bring this (among other lines)
kio_digik 3707 3713 marie-noelle 21u REG 253,2 43663360 10490666 /home/marie-noelle/Digikam/digikam4.db
when DK is running,
and nothing after exiting.

OK,

There is no part of digikam staying alive. I had such problems in the
past but this never killed my DB file.

Have you checked the digikam packages (rpm -V)? Are these files OK? Do
you have se-linux enabled? If so, can you try to disable and check if
all the problems persist?

Does this crash show the KrashManager? Is it a SIGSEGV or any other SIG
involved?

Just in case: Do you get the same libdc1394 error message if you start
digikam the "first" time?

Are these MP4 files really photos? I know this extension for movies
only. With movies I had some problems with digikam in the past (at least
two years ago but never tried it again).

These are old videos that where here before I began to use Digikam. I'll put them outside of the albums tree and make another test.

This message is fine. It's due to force init libdc1394 at startup
before to let's opencv or gphoto2 playing with it and crash digiKam.

I just moved all the videos outside of Digikam filetree and run another test after having restored a former uncorrupted DB.
Here it is:

1st launch from the console:

[marie-noelle@toshiba4 Digikam]$ digikam
libdc1394 error: Failed to initialize libdc1394
QSqlDatabasePrivate::removeDatabase: connection 'ConnectionTest' is still in use, all queries will cease to work.
QPainter::begin: Widget painting can only begin as a result of a paintEvent
QPainter::translate: Painter not active
QPainter::setClipRect: Painter not active
QPainter::setFont: Painter not active
QPainter::fontMetrics: Painter not active
QPainter::setPen: Painter not active
QPainter::setBrush: Painter not active
QPainter::setFont: Painter not active
QPainter::fontMetrics: Painter not active

etc.

In Digikam, hit F5 to refresh the DB, and wait till the most recent pictures appear in the Albums and Calendar.
Quit Digikam.
Check the DB isn't used any longer with command
lsof | grep -Ri digikam

Relaunch Digikam from the console
Got the usual error message "Impossible d'effectuer la mise à jour du schéma ..."
And in the console:

[marie-noelle@toshiba4 Digikam]$ digikam

digikam(3946)/digikam (core): Schema update to V6 failed!

After click 'OK' in the error window, Digikam main window open (and the lighttable too), albums are empty, calendar and tags seem to be there, but thumbnails are completely blank.
From the console, this message appear many, many times (I cannot go backward enough to see anything else):
digikam(3946)/digikam (core) Digikam::ThumbnailCreator::load: Thumbnail is null for ""

As the videos are now out the way, I guess the problem is elsewhere ... there seem to be an issue with the thumbnails (re)creation, don't you think?

This seems to have gone for quite some time. They still are UNCONFIRMED and NORMAL, but it seems we are several in that case, and there is no possibility to use Digikam when you get this problem. :-(

Several months ago, I had a version problem, and could fix it by manually editing the content of the settings table.
But this is a different case, as it seems Digikam has created a lot of DBVersion lines!
Using sqliteman, I have made an export of the whole table that you can find here: http://www.marie-noelle-augendre.com/fichiers/Digikam/export_DK_settings.html
Maybe it will give you useful information.
