Reading tags from XMP sidecar files

Gys van Zyl
Hi,

I have folders where digikam wrote tags to xmp sidecar files for all image files. I subsequently created a new database and now I want to add these folders to digikam as a collection, with the expectation that the tags will be read from the sidecar files. However, this does not happen. Even when I use Image>Metadata>Import XMP... for a specific image, the tags are not read.

Is there a way to get the tags from the sidecar files into the digikam database?

Gys

Things might have been improved. I am going to do a test. Which version of digikam or you using?

Re: Reading tags from XMP sidecar files

Gys van Zyl
Hi Rinus,

Thanks for the offer to help.

I'm using digikam version 2.0 from Phillip's ppa on ubuntu 11.04.

Writing to xmp sidecar definitely works. I can open the xmp file in a text editor and see the tags and rating that I created in digikam. The problem seems to be reading this information back from the xmp into the digikam database.

Re: Reading tags from XMP sidecar files

Have you check the option to read metadata from XMP side car files in the
"Metadata tab" of Digikam settings ?

One bad thing when I try this option, is Metadatas seems to be read from
XMP side car file, but, as EXIF are not wrote in these files, the Exif
orientation are not read, and a lot of picture doesn't have the right
orientation, but metadata seems to be read from XMP file.

Re: Reading tags from XMP sidecar files

Rinus
In reply to this post by Gys van Zyl
I wrote metadata to xmp, deleted the metadata from picture and imported from xmp with very little metadata showing up under xmp tab. Exiv, makernote and IPTC remains empty. To get it done I had to select one photo and by hand to point to the xmp file. I can not find a way to do it by batch for all pictures. So it might be needed to use an other photomangement program to get the metadata back in the photo. But according to my experience is almost all data lost.

Re: Reading tags from XMP sidecar files

Gys van Zyl
I have that option checked, yes. I'm aware of the problem that when you check this option, all the "normal" exif info is temporarily unavailable. For me this is OK, if only I can get digikam to read and commit to the database what is in the xmp sidecar. I'm only trying to read the tags that I created and ratings that I assigned. These fields I can't even read with the single image read from xmp process.

BTW in the Captions and Tags sidebar, right at the bottom there is a "More" button that you can use to read metadata from all selected images. Or rather, I think that's what it's supposed to do, as this option also does not work for me.

I think you can use exiftool to put the metadata back into your picture and from there digikam can read it again.

Install libimage-exiftool-perl
and this
exiftool -TagsFromFile IMGP8595.JPG.xmp IMGP8595.JPG
will put back in the picture what is left off the metadata.

Re: Reading tags from XMP sidecar files

I don't like that option. I principle I try not to touch my original files in any way. That's why I like the sidecar file - metadata can be added without modification to the original file.

In any event, I don't think its possible yet to write metadata to Canon raw files.

BTW in the Captions and Tags sidebar, right at the bottom there is a "More" button that you can use to read metadata from all selected images. Or rather, I think that's what it's supposed to do, as this option also does not work for me.

One bad thing when I try this option, is Metadatas seems to be read from XMP side car file, but, as EXIF are not wrote in these files, the Exif orientation are not read, and a lot of picture doesn't have the right orientation, but metadata seems to be read from XMP file.

With that option set the results are here even worse than without.

Re: Reading tags from XMP sidecar files

Gys van Zyl
Thanks for trying to help. I will try to recover what I can from the old SQlite database - it has gotten real messed up after using the same one for many versions of digikam. And I'll keep the xmp files, I'm sure things will improve in future.

Partially. I use a similar procedure as with my analogue photos. I
only use raw from my camera (so no jpeg which are often useless). I
don't want any program to alter my raw files. So not being able to
write to raw files is not a bad thing (imho).

For raw files a working sidecar file would be great. DK currently is
not able to handle this reliable so I use the DB only.

It is different to jpeg files, there I want all relevant data in my
jpeg files I generate from the raw one. As I use darktable for raw
processing this is a two step thing:

- generate jpeg (or png) from raw (if there was already a jpeg file
the new on is generated with a postfix.
- if there is a jpeg with postfix, extract the exif data from the old
one, add it to the new one and replace the old with the new one.

This works great with DK. So for jpeg files I don't need sidecar
files. In the contrary: what will happen, if the jpeg file is newer
than the sidecar one (altered by an other program)? should the
internal or external exif data be used? As no program alters my raw
files, there is no such problem.

Regards

Martin

Re: Reading tags from XMP sidecar files

Hi,

Also be aware of if you geo locate images then the xmp sidecar will be
overwritten with only geo location metadata:
