It would appear this idea by Wouter was not taken forward? Is there another way to ensure Digikam keeps track of the thumbnails of all pictures, also the ones for which the actual image is not available at the moment? That way, I could do a manual pull of the image if I decide I want to look at the full size version.
What do others whose collection of photos outgrows their main storage do?
