I - and some others - have had the problem, that seems to be related to the grouping function.
I had to delete some records in the DB to make the thumbnails reappear. If you search the archive of the list, you'll find some more details. In there, in the "versions" tab, you can see the versions of the image, with the raw one at the top. Hovering the entry, a small emblem will appear in the right side, with the tooltip text "Show this element permanently" (or there about, I translate back from danish). Click that, and the raw will be in your album view. The small icon/emblem/button thing will then let you hide it again. Nothing can be done in DK when it persists to not recognize the file. You need to 'clean' the database first.

I advice to have a look if under Settings->Configure Digikam->Editing Images the checkbox ¨always show original¨ has been checked.
