I turned of "looking for new images". Now digikam starts in a few
seconds... But I would say this is just a workaround - not a solution.
My digikam-Database is Sqlite - maybe MySQL is faster?

From what I know, Digikam has been developed with SQLite, and I'm not sure MySQL works so well.

Anyway, I don't understand very well why you need Digikam to look for new images in all your collections. How do you load new pictures?
When I put a memory card in the reader, Digikam is automatically launched and asks what/where I want to upload; so almost all the new pictures are loaded straight into Digikam and automatically recognized, and the collections updated.
It's not so often I use another way to add pictures, and when I do it, I know where I put them. It is then quite easy to ask Digikam to refresh the corresponding album(s).

I have the same problem. Digikam needs a lot of time checking for new
pictures. If I switch this off in preferences (not looking for new
pictures), it's starting quite fast.
I am not very happy with that, as checking for new pictures is actually
neccesary, if you directly put any pictures in your collection folder.
Otherwise they dont appear in your collection. After doing this I let
digikam restart for the search and afterwards switch that feature off
again.
If I have connected all external collections it takes 5 to 10 minutes as
well.
