Alternatively, is it possible to delete a digiKam database or preferences file, and then re-import folders, instead of moving all my pictures around? If so, please tell me the
name and location of such file(s).

Hi,
currently the IPTC keywords are only read from pictures that are newly
imported into the database. That is, if your pictures were already in the db,
there is currently the tool missing to do some batch operations reading
metadata into the db.
Workaround: Remove pictures, start digikam, close digikam, move back, start
digikam. Disadvantage: comments, tags, rating from db is lost for these
pictures.
The other direction, db->metadata, works currently in the way that if you
change tags (preferably with the right side bar, there is a bug for this),
and the relevant configuration option is set, the tags are written to IPTC.
